Desert areas

• Clothes
• Food
• Houses
• Flora and Fauna
Interesting Fact
•One-sixth of the
earth’s population
live in desert
region.
Clothes of people living in Hot Desert
Areas
• In the desert, people wear white clothing.
White reflects heat. Even the Tuareg, a desert
people famous for their blue-black clothing,
wear white outer garments occasionally. Next,
they cover their completely cloth themselves,
even in the heat of the day, is because it slows
the rate that sweat leaves the body. In other
words, ration sweat, not how much you drink.
Food of people living in Hot Desert
Areas
• Most desert peoples favor low-
protein cereal grains, high-protein
seeds, local varieties of vegetation,
and teas and coffee. The diet of
desert cultures can differ wildly
depending on the geography and
biodiversity of the area.
Fauna of Hot Desert Areas(Ship of the
desert)
• There are many floras in desert such as
camel,caracara,echidna,kowari etc. Firstly, about camel:-
•There are two species of Camels, the Bactrian and the Dromedary A
Camels hump is used to store fatty tissue which can be used as a
source of energy.
While some wild Camels still exist most Camels are domesticated.
Camels can withstand temperature and water consumption extremes
that would kill most animals.
Some tribes of people that live in the desert drink Camel milk.
Camels can drink one quarter of their weight, and store it for days.
Camels have three layers of eyelids to help provide protection from
blowing sand.
Camels evolved in North America and later migrated to Asia.
It is said that camels can drink over 30 gallons of water in 10 minutes.
About Caracara
Caracara are in the same bird Family as
Falcons.
Caracara spend a lot of time walking on
the ground.
Caracaras are mostly found in South and
Central America, but some are in the
southern United States.
About Echidna
• Echidna are egg laying mammals.
• Echidna eat ants and termites and
are sometimes called spiny
anteaters.
• There are four species of Echidna.
Flora of hot desert
• There are many plants in desert such as
Elephant tree, Organ Pipe Cactus, Desert Sage etc.Firstly, about Elephant
tree:-
This plant is a rare plant in the US in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
region, Sonoran Desert and also found in the Santa Rosa Mountains and
also in some parts of the south western part of the Arizona. This plant is
typically designed to adapt to desert climate, with a thick trunk that
stores water for days. It is small in size and its branches are quite small in
comparison to the size of its trunk. It also stores water in its lower limbs
and wood, apart from the trunk. The foliage of the plant is quite lightly
distributed which has flat, long, legume like leaves and exist in paired
leaflets. The flowers are born as rounded yellow structures in the bud
form and slowly blossom into beautiful small, star shaped white or cream
colored flowers. Most of the species of this plant are drought deciduous
owing to the warm climatic conditions and has leaves throughout the
year, except in drought and extreme cold weather.
About organ pipe cactus
• This species of cactus is commonly found in the rocky
deserts of Mexico and the US. It has narrow stems that
grow straight from a small trunk just above the ground.
These stems usually do not grow into branches and spread
out but they grow a little every year from the tip of each of
the stem. It takes about 150 years for a plant to reach the
mature stage. The older plants produce purple or light pink
tinted flowers which have a special characteristic. These
flowers remain opened during the night and by the time
the sun rises, they close again. The fruits these plants
produce are said to be tastier than watermelon. They serve
as food to the native Americans and are also used as
medicines. These plants are pollinated by bats.
