Germany annexed Austria in 1938 in a political union known as the "Anschluss". Austria was experiencing economic crisis after World War 1 and many Austrians supported union with Germany. In March 1938, Germany invaded Austria and controlled a plebiscite that showed 99.7% approval of the Anschluss. Britain and France did not oppose the invasion due to their own domestic political issues. The Catholic Church denounced the Nazis but Austria was now under German control.
