COUPLE INTRODUCTION
Meet Connor and Emily.
They were recently engaged in December and have decided
on a small, intimate summer wedding.
They have decided on Vail, Colorado as their wedding location.
The numerous outdoor activities that Vail has to offer played
a large role in why they chose this location, as they hope to
explore all Vail has to offer.
They chose to stay at the Four Seasons Vail Resort because
of its commitment to luxury and dedication to their guests.
Connor and Emily’s interest in environmental science also
drew them to the Four Seasons because of the resort’s
commitment to sustainable practice and design.
The Four Season’s newly relocated spa, Anpassen Salon and
Spa, intrigued Connor and Emily. They hope to provide their
wedding party and immediate family with a high-end spa
experience to relax and celebrate before their big day.
VAIL, COLORADO
Vail is located in the Northwestern region of the state of
Colorado in the United States.
Vail is two hours behind Eastern Standard Time.
The Town of Vail sits at an elevation of 8,150 feet and Vail
Mountain rises to 11,570 feet.
During the summer months, Vail is relatively mild with warm
days and chilly nights. During winter months, Vail becomes
frigid with ample amounts of snowfall.
The town of Vail was incorporated in 1966. Since then, Vail has
grown to become the single largest resort in the United States.
It consists of 5,289 acres of diverse skiing and hiking options
throughout the 7 mile stretch of mountain. The Tyrolean-style
village is lined with various boutiques and shops, all within
walking distance of each other. The town of Vail is linked by
free shuttles and has heated streets to encourage walking.
With year-round events, from hiking and concerts, to skiing
and ice-skating competitions, Vail has plenty of opportunities
for exploration and entertainment.
FOUR SEASONS RESORT AT VAIL
Four Seasons Hotels, Inc. is a 5-star luxury international
hotel group founded in Canada in 1960. Four Seasons leads
the industry against other luxury competitors by rejecting
the design standardizations in favor of embracing local
architecture and design styles.
Four Seasons Hotels has an unwavering dedication to
hospitality standards by:
Providing an exceptional quality of guest experience.
Creating enduring value by investing in superior design
features and finishes.
Instilling a sense of dignity, pride, and satisfaction in its
employees.
Fostering an environment of mutual respect and
teamwork.
The Four Seasons Resort at Vail seeks to:
Revamp current spa and relocate to larger, adjacent
building.
Reflect resort’s current aesthetics.
Create connection to surrounding community.
Strengthen and enforce resort’s commitment to
sustainability.
DESIGN INTENT NARRATIVE
ANPASSEN: German: verb, “to adapt or adjust.”
The concept for the Anpassen Salon and Spa is inspired by the physical changes that occur in the natural
surroundings of Vail throughout the four seasons.
At the foot of Vail Mountain in Colorado sits the Four Seasons at Vail, with its European chateau- ambience
and warm, mountain-inspired architecture. This year-round resort is the largest, single-mountain resort in
the United States; offering a variety of outdoor activities throughout each season. Anpassen Salon and Spa
aims to create an environment that adapts to the needs of the human body as they encounter the natural
elements. The needs throughout each season are as follows; warmth and relaxing during winter, energizing
and revitalizing during spring, cool and refreshing during summer, and rejuvenating and renewal during fall.
The physical changes to the surrounding natural environment of Vail throughout each season will serve as
inspiration for spatial circulation and aesthetics. Fluid movement from one space to the next will mimic the
continuous transition between seasons. However, distinct materiality and lighting will help define the variety
of spatial types throughout the spa. This contrast will be made by utilizing different lighting methods, as well
as varying hard, dark and soft, light textures and materials.
The materials and furnishings chosen for the spa will directly reflect the Four Seasons dedication to
sustainability. Existing floors of the spa’s location will be replaced with reclaimed wood from the entry
into public treatment rooms, hair, and nail services. Recycled stone and glass tiles will be installed into
all restrooms, locker rooms, and private treatment rooms. To increase the air quality within the spa, lowVOC paints and low-emitting furnishings will be used. Daylight and occupancy sensors will help reduce the
amount of energy the spa uses, in addition to low-flow fixtures where plumbing is needed. Lastly, recycling
practices are utilized daily by employees to reduce the amount of waste the spa produces.
By combining the human needs and physical changes throughout each season, a unique connection is
made between the spa and Vail. It not only blends the surrounding natural environment with the interior
space, but evokes a sense of place for patrons. Their experience within Anpassen Salon and Spa will be
one that is both luxurious and relaxing, but ultimately one that makes them more aware of their impact on
the environment and its impact on them.
POTENTIAL LOGO DESIGNS

All logos will made by local artisans using salvaged materials from existing Four Seasons Vail spa.
9 VAIL ROAD
9 Vail Rd. is a condominium complex owned by Vail Reality.
It is located on the corner of Vail Road and West Meadow
Drive at a latitude of 39°38’9” N, longitude of 106°21’47” W.
The condominiums are adjacent to The Four Seasons at
Vail Resort, which will be purchasing the first floor to expand
the current spa.
Anpassen Salon and Spa will be fully functional and accessible
to both Four Seasons Vail guests and condominium residents
and guests.
The seven guest experiences that we will be focusing on
are Reception, Lounge, Public Treatment Area, Couples
Treatment Room, Pool, Salon, and Retail.

RECEPTION PERSPECTIVE
Upon entry of Anpassen, Connor and Emily are greeted by the
receptionist. A custom recycled glass chandelier accentuates the
center of the room and sets the luxurious tone of the spa. Rich wood
flooring and stone walls salvaged from the existing Four Seasons Vail
Spa are used throughout to create a contrasting, natural space.

Glass used for the logo in the
reception was recycled from
Four Season’s current spa
and shaped by a local artisan
to create a custom brand for
the spa as well as support
Vail businesses.

Each circle of this

RECEPTION MILLWORK
FRONT ELEVATION

RIGHT ELEVATION

The base of the curved reception desk is made of strand
woven aspen panels from Sustainable Flooring. This company’s
manufacturing headquarters is located in Boulder, CO, so all
wood within the millwork is locally sourced. These panels consist
of 100% recycled content. Both the back and the front of the
panels can be used for aesthetics. They are made with low-VOC,
E0-compliant, and NAUF (No Added Urea Formaldehyde) glues
to improve indoor air quality.
The frosted glass top of the reception desk is salvaged from the
spa’s existing location and cut to size. The satin-like finish does
not mark with dirt or fingerprints which allows for a sleek, polished
look and is easy to clean.

LOUNGE PERSPECTIVE
After checking in, Connor and Emily patiently await their spa treatment
in the lounge located directly behind the reception. Dim LED lighting
and a bio-ethanol fireplace are used to create an intimate, relaxing
setting. Reclaimed wood wall art and a painting made by a local artisan
keep guests intrigued as they wait for their appointments.

The fireplace used is a
Bio-Blaze wall mounted
fireplace. It uses bio-ethanol
fuel that burns clean and is
non-toxic. It releases very
little carbon dioxide and
water vapor.

PUBLIC TREATMENT AREA PERSPECTIVE
As Connor changes in the locker room for their couples massage,
a spa staff member brings Emily a magazine to read in the Public
Treatment Area. Neutral tones and textures, along with grand seating
cushions and sheer drapery are used to create a soft, inviting seating
area.

All fabrics chosen throughout
the spa contribute to the
spa’s
commitment
to
sustainable practice. Both
Green Guard certified and
contributions to LEED played
a role in selection.

COUPLES TREATMENT ROOM PERSPECTIVE
Connor and Emily make an appointment for an hour long couples
massage. The ambient overhead lighting and warm materials create
a soothing environment that encourages relaxation. Greenery within
the space, as well as throughout the entire spa, helps improve indoor
air quality for guests.

Linens in the treatment
rooms are regularly washed
due to the high number of
appointments.
However,
energy efficient, low-flow

Outdoor Pool Area
POOL PERSPECTIVE (INDOORS)
Before heading over to their appointment at the unisex salon, Connor
and Emily decide to take dip in the indoor/outdoor pool. The pool’s
temperature is maintained by solar panels located on the overhang
above the pool. It adjusts to meet the needs of the human body during
each season. Recycled stone tile flooring also adjusts its temperature
to encourage outdoor use during the winter.

Neutral tones of recycled
stone and glass are used
primarily in the pool area to
avoid slippage and to create
a refreshing environment
that doesn’t distract from the
natural surroundings.

Towels are provided by Anpassen
by request to reduce the amount
of laundry and water that

SALON FLOOR PLAN

provides amenities for both
men and women.

To W/Pedi
SALON PERSPECTIVE
After freshening up from their swim, Connor and Emily head over to
the salon to clean up before the big day. The salon is designed so
men and women hair styling stations are located on opposite walls.
A neutral color pallet with pops of blue is introduced to create a more
energizing and refreshing environment.

While there is no Greenstar
salon equipment on the market,
Anpassen utilizes occupancy
sensors in all areas of the spa to
reduce the amount of energy it
uses daily.

In addition to the occupancy
sensors. all light fixtures use either
fluorescent or LED lightbulbs. This
allows for up to 80% less energy
used. This creates a more natural
light that compliments guest
features and skin.

GREEN SOURCES INDEX
I am a fifth year senior in the
interior design program at
Virginia Tech. Upon entering
to college, I knew I wanted to
pursue design. However, I did
not get into the program right
away. I went through the internal
transfer process and was set
back a year in my studies. At the
time, I saw it as a failure, but I
believe it has made me a more
intelligence and creative design
student. Over the past five
years, I have maintained Dean’s
List each semester and will be
graduating with Summa Cum
Laude honors this spring.
The knowledge and skills I have learned as a student has been helped me
succeed as a professional. I have held intern positions in both Richmond at
JMJ Corporation and in Northern Virginia at Fox Architects. These positions
have only benefitted and furthered my skills and interest in design. Upon
graduation, I hope to continue working and living in Washington D.C. at a
firm that has a hospitality design sector. I am both excited and anxious to
see what the next chapter of my life will be like and hope I get to experience
all that the design world has to offer.

  • 3. COUPLE INTRODUCTION Meet Connor and Emily. They were recently engaged in December and have decided on a small, intimate summer wedding. They have decided on Vail, Colorado as their wedding location. The numerous outdoor activities that Vail has to offer played a large role in why they chose this location, as they hope to explore all Vail has to offer. They chose to stay at the Four Seasons Vail Resort because of its commitment to luxury and dedication to their guests. Connor and Emily’s interest in environmental science also drew them to the Four Seasons because of the resort’s commitment to sustainable practice and design. The Four Season’s newly relocated spa, Anpassen Salon and Spa, intrigued Connor and Emily. They hope to provide their wedding party and immediate family with a high-end spa experience to relax and celebrate before their big day.
  • 4. VAIL, COLORADO Vail is located in the Northwestern region of the state of Colorado in the United States. Vail is two hours behind Eastern Standard Time. The Town of Vail sits at an elevation of 8,150 feet and Vail Mountain rises to 11,570 feet. During the summer months, Vail is relatively mild with warm days and chilly nights. During winter months, Vail becomes frigid with ample amounts of snowfall. The town of Vail was incorporated in 1966. Since then, Vail has grown to become the single largest resort in the United States. It consists of 5,289 acres of diverse skiing and hiking options throughout the 7 mile stretch of mountain. The Tyrolean-style village is lined with various boutiques and shops, all within walking distance of each other. The town of Vail is linked by free shuttles and has heated streets to encourage walking. With year-round events, from hiking and concerts, to skiing and ice-skating competitions, Vail has plenty of opportunities for exploration and entertainment.
  • 5. FOUR SEASONS RESORT AT VAIL Four Seasons Hotels, Inc. is a 5-star luxury international hotel group founded in Canada in 1960. Four Seasons leads the industry against other luxury competitors by rejecting the design standardizations in favor of embracing local architecture and design styles. Four Seasons Hotels has an unwavering dedication to hospitality standards by: Providing an exceptional quality of guest experience. Creating enduring value by investing in superior design features and finishes. Instilling a sense of dignity, pride, and satisfaction in its employees. Fostering an environment of mutual respect and teamwork. The Four Seasons Resort at Vail seeks to: Revamp current spa and relocate to larger, adjacent building. Reflect resort’s current aesthetics. Create connection to surrounding community. Strengthen and enforce resort’s commitment to sustainability.
  • 6. DESIGN INTENT NARRATIVE ANPASSEN: German: verb, “to adapt or adjust.” The concept for the Anpassen Salon and Spa is inspired by the physical changes that occur in the natural surroundings of Vail throughout the four seasons. At the foot of Vail Mountain in Colorado sits the Four Seasons at Vail, with its European chateau- ambience and warm, mountain-inspired architecture. This year-round resort is the largest, single-mountain resort in the United States; offering a variety of outdoor activities throughout each season. Anpassen Salon and Spa aims to create an environment that adapts to the needs of the human body as they encounter the natural elements. The needs throughout each season are as follows; warmth and relaxing during winter, energizing and revitalizing during spring, cool and refreshing during summer, and rejuvenating and renewal during fall. The physical changes to the surrounding natural environment of Vail throughout each season will serve as inspiration for spatial circulation and aesthetics. Fluid movement from one space to the next will mimic the continuous transition between seasons. However, distinct materiality and lighting will help define the variety of spatial types throughout the spa. This contrast will be made by utilizing different lighting methods, as well as varying hard, dark and soft, light textures and materials. The materials and furnishings chosen for the spa will directly reflect the Four Seasons dedication to sustainability. Existing floors of the spa’s location will be replaced with reclaimed wood from the entry into public treatment rooms, hair, and nail services. Recycled stone and glass tiles will be installed into all restrooms, locker rooms, and private treatment rooms. To increase the air quality within the spa, lowVOC paints and low-emitting furnishings will be used. Daylight and occupancy sensors will help reduce the amount of energy the spa uses, in addition to low-flow fixtures where plumbing is needed. Lastly, recycling practices are utilized daily by employees to reduce the amount of waste the spa produces. By combining the human needs and physical changes throughout each season, a unique connection is made between the spa and Vail. It not only blends the surrounding natural environment with the interior space, but evokes a sense of place for patrons. Their experience within Anpassen Salon and Spa will be one that is both luxurious and relaxing, but ultimately one that makes them more aware of their impact on the environment and its impact on them. POTENTIAL LOGO DESIGNS All logos will made by local artisans using salvaged materials from existing Four Seasons Vail spa.
  • 7. 9 VAIL ROAD 9 Vail Rd. is a condominium complex owned by Vail Reality. It is located on the corner of Vail Road and West Meadow Drive at a latitude of 39°38’9” N, longitude of 106°21’47” W. The condominiums are adjacent to The Four Seasons at Vail Resort, which will be purchasing the first floor to expand the current spa. Anpassen Salon and Spa will be fully functional and accessible to both Four Seasons Vail guests and condominium residents and guests. The seven guest experiences that we will be focusing on are Reception, Lounge, Public Treatment Area, Couples Treatment Room, Pool, Salon, and Retail. • 9. RECEPTION PERSPECTIVE Upon entry of Anpassen, Connor and Emily are greeted by the receptionist. A custom recycled glass chandelier accentuates the center of the room and sets the luxurious tone of the spa. Rich wood flooring and stone walls salvaged from the existing Four Seasons Vail Spa are used throughout to create a contrasting, natural space. Glass used for the logo in the reception was recycled from Four Season’s current spa and shaped by a local artisan to create a custom brand for the spa as well as support Vail businesses. Each circle of this wall art is made from strands of bamboo shaped into a circle. The piece is made of all natural material and is lightweight.
  • 10. ELEVATION RECEPTION MILLWORK FRONT ELEVATION RIGHT ELEVATION The base of the curved reception desk is made of strand woven aspen panels from Sustainable Flooring. This company’s manufacturing headquarters is located in Boulder, CO, so all wood within the millwork is locally sourced. These panels consist of 100% recycled content. Both the back and the front of the panels can be used for aesthetics. They are made with low-VOC, E0-compliant, and NAUF (No Added Urea Formaldehyde) glues to improve indoor air quality. The frosted glass top of the reception desk is salvaged from the spa’s existing location and cut to size. The satin-like finish does not mark with dirt or fingerprints which allows for a sleek, polished look and is easy to clean.

  • 14. LOUNGE PERSPECTIVE After checking in, Connor and Emily patiently await their spa treatment in the lounge located directly behind the reception. Dim LED lighting and a bio-ethanol fireplace are used to create an intimate, relaxing setting. Reclaimed wood wall art and a painting made by a local artisan keep guests intrigued as they wait for their appointments. The fireplace used is a Bio-Blaze wall mounted fireplace. It uses bio-ethanol fuel that burns clean and is non-toxic. It releases very little carbon dioxide and water vapor. This twisted vine wall artwork is made from reclaimed wood tropical vines. It is easy to hang and requires little maintenance.

  • 18. PUBLIC TREATMENT AREA PERSPECTIVE As Connor changes in the locker room for their couples massage, a spa staff member brings Emily a magazine to read in the Public Treatment Area. Neutral tones and textures, along with grand seating cushions and sheer drapery are used to create a soft, inviting seating area. All fabrics chosen throughout the spa contribute to the spa’s commitment to sustainable practice. Both Green Guard certified and contributions to LEED played a role in selection. Minimal flooring material selection throughout public spaces and corridors allows for more control over use of recycled and reclaimed materials in the spa.

  • 22. COUPLES TREATMENT ROOM PERSPECTIVE Connor and Emily make an appointment for an hour long couples massage. The ambient overhead lighting and warm materials create a soothing environment that encourages relaxation. Greenery within the space, as well as throughout the entire spa, helps improve indoor air quality for guests. Linens in the treatment rooms are regularly washed due to the high number of appointments. However, energy efficient, low-flow washing machines are used to reduce water use. The masseuse uses massage oils that are nontoxic and sustainable. The packaging of these product lines are nontoxic, rapidly renewable materials.

  • 26. POOL PERSPECTIVE (INDOORS) Before heading over to their appointment at the unisex salon, Connor and Emily decide to take dip in the indoor/outdoor pool. The pool’s temperature is maintained by solar panels located on the overhang above the pool. It adjusts to meet the needs of the human body during each season. Recycled stone tile flooring also adjusts its temperature to encourage outdoor use during the winter. Neutral tones of recycled stone and glass are used primarily in the pool area to avoid slippage and to create a refreshing environment that doesn’t distract from the natural surroundings. Towels are provided by Anpassen by request to reduce the amount of laundry and water that Anpassen uses. All appliances to do laundry are low-flow and energy efficient.

  • 30. SALON PERSPECTIVE After freshening up from their swim, Connor and Emily head over to the salon to clean up before the big day. The salon is designed so men and women hair styling stations are located on opposite walls. A neutral color pallet with pops of blue is introduced to create a more energizing and refreshing environment. While there is no Greenstar salon equipment on the market, Anpassen utilizes occupancy sensors in all areas of the spa to reduce the amount of energy it uses daily. In addition to the occupancy sensors. all light fixtures use either fluorescent or LED lightbulbs. This allows for up to 80% less energy used. This creates a more natural light that compliments guest features and skin.

The aesthetics of the retail are identical to the reception to continue the flow of space. LED light tape highlights where products are displayed on both freestanding fixtures and wall displays. As stated before, the products Anpassen have to offer are sustainable in both content and packaging, as well as how they are manufactured. The built-in wall display uses 75% of materials salvaged from the existing Four Seasons Spa.

  • 38. I am a fifth year senior in the interior design program at Virginia Tech. Upon entering to college, I knew I wanted to pursue design. However, I did not get into the program right away. I went through the internal transfer process and was set back a year in my studies. At the time, I saw it as a failure, but I believe it has made me a more intelligence and creative design student. Over the past five years, I have maintained Dean’s List each semester and will be graduating with Summa Cum Laude honors this spring. The knowledge and skills I have learned as a student has been helped me succeed as a professional. I have held intern positions in both Richmond at JMJ Corporation and in Northern Virginia at Fox Architects. These positions have only benefitted and furthered my skills and interest in design. Upon graduation, I hope to continue working and living in Washington D.C. at a firm that has a hospitality design sector. I am both excited and anxious to see what the next chapter of my life will be like and hope I get to experience all that the design world has to offer. BIOGRAPHY
