Peafowl live in small family groups in India, where they can live up to 20 years. They eat a variety of plants and small animals found on the ground. Male peafowl, called peacocks, have colorful plumage on their neck and tail with distinctive patterns and colors not seen in female peafowl, called peahens. Peafowl breed seasonally in early summer, with peahens laying one egg per week over the course of the breeding period. Despite their small family sizes, peafowl populations are not considered endangered.
