How might we design a mobile
app that empowers people to
learn new vocabulary?
31, from Brasil
Lives in Berlin
Works as a Product Manager
Maike
Silva
"I want to be able to
follow German media
for my work. It’s
time for me to raise
the bar without
committing to a
timeline."
Maike needs a practical and
fun way to improve her
vocabulary, because she
wants to follow German media
with ease.
We'll know this to be true, when Maike can comprehend an
episode from a popular political ZDF-podcast in German.

promises to improve one's writing, reading,
speaking and memory skills with 40+
games.

How does the app
fulfil the needs of
the users?
User testing surfaced
some of the flaws in the
designs. Some of them
were in fact major
usability problems.
Next iteration
was designed
based on user
feedback
AHEAD gives users
options to create their
own learning experience
while supporting them
with a personalised
curriculum.
Lessons learned
An iterative design process is inevitable, in fact it's
detrimental.
Fidelity of prototypes should be just right.
Testing as much as possible within budget and
time constraints is essential.
