SESSION ABSTRACT
You’ve been a .NET developer for the last 10 years. You love Visual Studio. You can spit out C# like a boy scout can tie a knot. But now your boss wants you to build an iPad app for the company. Or maybe you got a good deal on a Mac on eBay and you’ll finally write that cool iPhone app that will top the other 600K in the iOS App Store. So where do you get started? What development environment do you use? How do you write apps in Objective-C compared to C#? What other tools & libraries can you use? This session is your survival guide to the world of iOS development as seen from the eyes of a .NET developer. We’ll start from the basics and build our first iOS app, using analogies and comparisons from the familiar world of Visual Studio and .NET as our guide. We’ll also discuss how to structure our app project, how to test & deploy our app, and we’ll even take a quick look at some of the new developer features in iOS 7.
We'll also discuss how to cloud-enable your apps using Microsoft Azure Mobile Services, which features native support for iOS developers.
You’ll learn to blend in with the Apple crowd and talk like a true native in no time! If you’ve ever considered dipping your toes in the iWaters, this session is your chance to take your first dive.
Model View ViewModel (MVVM) is an architectural pattern that originated from Microsoft and provides a pattern for code-sharing across Windows Store and Windows Phone apps; however, you can take MVVM anywhere - including iOS and Android!
MVVM frameworks act as the glue that ties together the apps user interface and business logic and adds amazing features such as data binding and commands. There are several MVVM frameworks that allow you to share more code on iOS, Android, and Windows including Bind, MVVM Light, MvvmCross, and Xamarin.Forms ships with its own lightweight MVVM framework. Come learn what exactly the MVVM pattern is, and when to use it. We will go through the pros and cons of several architectural patterns, such as MVC and MVP, and compare them to MVVM. We will investigate several different MVVM frameworks from lightweight to heavier approaches. Walk away with the ability to leverage the MVVM framework for optimal code reuse in creating beautiful native mobile applications on every platform
NativeScript: Cross-Platform Mobile Apps with JavaScript and AngularTodd Anglin
Do you want to build native mobile apps for iOS and Android? Are you a web developer? Then NativeScript is the perfect framework for you. NativeScript is an open source framework for creating native mobile apps using the skills of the web developer: JavaScript, CSS and simple tag-based markup. Create rich, high-performance iOS and Android apps with 100% native UI using many of the skills you already have.
Topics covered include:
NativeScript framework core concepts and getting started
Accessing native device capabilities with JavaScript
Building native mobile apps with Angular 2
Common app patterns (login, settings, data bound list and more)
Styling NativeScript with CSS
Targeting specific devices and screens
Debugging and deploying to devices
There has never been a better (and easier) way for web developers to create native mobile apps.

It was meant to be a 20 mins sharing to fellow developers who have otherwise had no exposure or experience to Objective-C or GUI programming.
iOS for Android Developers (with Swift)David Truxall
As an app developer there is always pressure to understand and be able to address both major platforms. At first blush, coding for iOS seems quite different than for Android, perhaps due to the language differences between Objective-C and Java, and of course there is a different IDE and framework. With the introduction of Swift, this chasm seems much smaller. This talk will map Android and Java functionality to similar concepts in iOS using Swift. We’ll see the similarities and differences, focusing on framework concepts, and migrate a simple Android app to iOS.

Ultra Fast, Cross Genre, Procedural Content Generation in Games [Master Thesis]Mohammad Shaker
In my MSc. thesis, I have re-tackled the problem of procedurally generating content for physics-based games I have previously investigated in my BSc. graduation thesis. This time around I propose two novel methods: the first is projection based for faster generation of physics-based games content. The other, The Progressive Generation, is a generic, wide-range, across genre, customisable with playability check method all bundled in a fast progressive approach. This new method is applied on two completely different games: NEXT And Cut the Rope.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

Globus Compute wth IRI Workflows - GlobusWorld 2024Globus
As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. As part of the work the team is investigating ways to speedup the time to solution for many different parts of the DIII-D workflow including how they run jobs on HPC systems. One of these routes is looking at Globus Compute as a way to replace the current method for managing tasks and we describe a brief proof of concept showing how Globus Compute could help to schedule jobs and be a tool to connect compute at different facilities.
We describe the deployment and use of Globus Compute for remote computation. This content is aimed at researchers who wish to compute on remote resources using a unified programming interface, as well as system administrators who will deploy and operate Globus Compute services on their research computing infrastructure.
