Vietnamese internet service firms are increasingly developing online games as a way to generate revenue. As the internet market slows due to economic conditions, games are seen as a quick path to profits. Several major firms such as Vat Gia and VNPay have entered the game industry despite initially viewing games negatively. Ott content services in vietnam an inevitable market trend

The development of broadband infrastructure and widespread smartphone adoption has made OTT services like phone calls, messaging, and video popular among users. Viettel dominated Vietnam's telecommunications market in 2012, capturing 40.05% of mobile subscribers and 45.31% of 2G subscribers. VNPT was the leading provider of fixed-line telephone and internet services, holding 75.4% and 57.68% market shares respectively. Total telecommunications revenue in Vietnam reached $8.5 billion in 2012, a 21% increase from 2011, with mobile services accounting for 76.43% of total revenue and growing over $1 billion. The number of internet and mobile subscribers increased while fixed broadband subscribers rose 24.74% to 4.8 million.
The paradox in the 3 g market
The 3G mobile market in Vietnam saw fierce competition that drove prices down significantly, making Vietnam's 3G prices among the lowest in the world. However, mobile operators were not generating sufficient revenue to cover costs. As a result, operators submitted plans to increase 3G fees to the Ministry of Information and Communications. While fee increases were inevitable to boost operator revenues, subscribers opposed any hikes given Vietnam's lower incomes and dissatisfaction with service quality and speeds. A survey showed subscriber satisfaction declining as the number of users rose, indicating price increases could reduce the subscriber base.
Cash stifles mobile payment
1. Despite efforts by service providers, mobile payments have not taken off in Vietnam as people prefer using cash. Mobile payments are expected to grow significantly in Asia Pacific, reaching over $3.6 billion by 2015, though adoption has been slow even in countries with high mobile penetration like Singapore.
2. In Vietnam, many banks and telecom companies have launched mobile payment services but they remain less popular than cash payments. People are hesitant to learn about new payment methods and prefer avoiding perceived risks with cash. Adoption has also been hampered by a lack of education from service providers about mobile payment options.

Chinese firms distribute games illegally in vietnam
KoramGame, a subsidiary of the Chinese company Kunlun, has been illegally distributing Chinese games in Vietnam through shell companies like CENS and Vietking Games. Another Chinese company, Tuyet Pham JSC, a subsidiary of SOHU Group, has also been illegally distributing games in Vietnam through partnerships with domestic game portals. These and other Chinese firms like Lemon Game have been quietly entering the Vietnamese market through dubious means in order to conquer the gaming market, bringing threats such as uncensored politically-motivated content and unfair competitive practices.

Year 2013 is really a hard time for marketers in developing marketing strategy and plan regarding to Vietnam economic downturn and the evolvement of internet and online community today. Traditionally, marketers have been questioned a lot by Board of Directors in regard to marketing investment effectiveness. It is still the same problem, even much harder for marketers to plan an effective marketing strategy today, to satisfy not just only offline but also online customers, particularly in the context of Vietnam today economic downturn. Yet, the so called “emerging market” makes Vietnam attractive to global brands, thus the entries of Starbucks, McDonald…in 2013 will make the competition much fiercer! Branding in Vietnam market thus becomes very challenging and here below is the three key trends that I can predict:
Making apps easily done, difficult to sell in vietnam
Making apps is easy but difficult to monetize according to Vietnamese app developers and analysts. While tens of thousands of apps have been created, only about 2% generate revenue. The cost to develop an app can range from $5,600 for more complex games, to as little as $50,000 for simpler apps. However, apps typically need tens of thousands of downloads before companies will pay for ads, where some ads can earn $200 per day. The most successful revenue generating apps tend to be games, with one game company earning up to $3 million per month from a popular game.
Vietnam Rises as Smartphone Producer
Vietnam is becoming a leading smartphone producer in the world according to a Japanese economic daily. Samsung Electronics Vietnam plans to produce 240 million smartphones in 2013, accounting for 20% of the global market share and putting Vietnam second only to China. In addition to profits for Samsung, this growth will benefit Vietnam's economy through job creation and infrastructure development. Samsung chose Vietnam for its low labor costs and convenient access to important markets in Japan, China, and Taiwan. Vietnam exported $13 billion worth of phones and parts in 2013, nearly doubling the previous year's exports.
Vietnam Digital Content Firms Can Exist, but Cannot Live Well
Vietnamese digital content firms struggle due to a lack of creativity, qualified labor force, and meaningful support from the state. Firms have difficulty producing original content that can compete internationally. Vietnam has only 1,000 qualified professionals in the digital content industry compared to 100,000 in South Korea and 300,000 in China. While the government has policies to support digital content firms, the policies are vague without clear definitions and slow implementation, making it difficult for firms to benefit. This hinders the growth of Vietnam's fledgling digital content industry.
Vietnam – the paradise for 3 g users
John, a British tourist, was surprised by Vietnam's inexpensive and widespread 3G services. He bought a prepaid SIM card for less than $3 that provided over $5 of account value. He was able to use 3G anywhere in both Hanoi and Ninh Binh without interruption. Other foreigners were also surprised that they could access the internet, social media, games and calls everywhere for only $1 per month, even in remote areas. By the end of 2012, Vietnam had over 16 million 3G subscribers despite the global economic crisis, showing the increasing investments in 3G networks.
Telecoms industry set for sector shake up
The Vietnamese government approved a plan to restructure the telecommunications industry this year to ensure only three or four healthy companies remain. The restructuring will include encouraging mergers and acquisitions, revoking licenses for inefficient companies, and preventing companies from investing in non-core businesses. The telecommunications market saw significant changes in the past year, including some companies leaving the market or having their licenses revoked due to fierce competition. The government aims to strengthen its role in state-owned telecom enterprises while helping them become more self-sufficient.
Low cost smart phone market to heat up in 2013
Vietnam's mobile network operators are targeting the low-cost smartphone market segment in 2013 by selling phones integrated with their services for under $200. Vietnamobile plans promotion campaigns to distribute these phones directly to customers, partnering with manufacturers. The phones will offer basic internet, camera, and video capabilities despite their low prices. Major networks previously focused on high-end iPhones and Blackberries but are now embracing cheaper smartphones, especially Android-based ones, which saw strong growth in Vietnam in 2012.
Vietnam mobile subscribers crazy for spam
Mobile subscribers in Vietnam are receiving a high volume of unwanted spam messages, especially those containing pornographic or sexual content. These messages are being sent late at night and sometimes 10 times per day, annoying and disturbing recipients. Mobile carriers have received many complaints about spam but have had limited success blocking the messages. Carriers have blocked messages from overseas servers and restricted domestic users sending bulk messages, but the problem remains difficult to fully address as spammers use fake information or abandon numbers. The government has fined some companies sending spam but the penalties may not be heavy enough to deter the profitable practice.
Tagit launches aggregated mobile banking service in vietnam
Tagit, a Singapore-based mobile banking solutions company, announced the launch of the first aggregated mobile banking service in Vietnam through a partnership with Smartlink, a leading Vietnamese payment switch operator. The new service will allow over 40 million bankcard holders and 120 mobile users in Vietnam to access mobile services through their banks. It provides a scalable and secure platform for banks to offer innovative mobile apps in a cost-effective way. This partnership will expand Tagit's presence in Vietnam and other regions.
Vietnam Promising Macroeconomics but a Regulatory Mess
Vietnam has achieved strong GDP growth through low-cost labor and foreign investment, transitioning to a middle-income economy in under 20 years. However, the mobile market faces challenges from state-owned dominance and lack of regulatory support for competition and innovation. The top three mobile operators control 90% of the market. Foreign investors struggle due to state dominance and two major players have exited. Regulatory intervention has failed to reduce prices significantly or promote competition, resulting in downward price pressure and weak customer loyalty across a market dominated by prepaid users.

CPs in Vietnam receive only 30-40% of profits from mobile content services while mobile network operators receive 60-70%, placing CPs at a disadvantage. A new decree aims to create fairer profit sharing ratios that allocate more to CPs. However, CPs remain skeptical and continue struggling financially, having to take side jobs or focus on existing services to survive while waiting for the new regulations to take effect.
Vietnamese It firms keep indifferent to developing apps for education
Despite high demand for educational apps, IT firms are indifferent to developing them due to high costs of investment. Educational apps currently make up just 5% of total apps, with 70% coming from foreign sources. While entertainment apps attract more users and clients, analysts see educational apps as a potential profitable market for IT firms as demand increases from parents and the use of smartphones and tablets for learning grows more popular. However, IT firms remain focused on entertainment apps that provide quicker financial returns.
E marketing- for young people in vietnam, where teens & technology meet
E-marketing is becoming an innovative strategy that is appealing to young people in Vietnam. It suits teenagers who love social media and technology. The main tools used in e-marketing include social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. While a degree is not required, candidates should be enthusiastic about social media. One company, MCCorp, published a creative job posting for e-marketing positions that emphasized social media skills over qualifications. Their approach was successful in attracting many young applicants. As technology continues to develop, e-marketing is becoming a more popular career choice that allows young people to express their creativity.

Android Dominates as Budget Tablets Flood Vietnam: IDC 14 Jun 2013 Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, June 14, 2013 – According to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker, Vietnamese tablet shipments in 1Q13 grew at 28% QoQ and 130% YoY to 130,608 units. Fueling this growth were budget Android tablets targeted at the low-cost market, under brand names like POP, Coby and Cutepad. "A flood of inexpensive Android tablets gave the Vietnam market the boost it needed to continue growing,” says Võ Lê Tâm Thanh, Senior Market Analyst, Mobile Devices at IDC Vietnam. "Although Android was the top OS, Samsung suffered the most business impact from this influx of budget tablets in the first quarter of 2013, but we expect the vendor to bounce back strongly over the rest of the year.” He explains that on the other hand, Apple had no such concerns as it maintained a healthy lead over other vendors in Vietnam. Daniel Pang, ASEAN Research Manager for Client Devices Research at IDC Asia/Pacific comments, "The tablet market has tremendous room for growth in Vietnam, as it has been relatively slow to take off when compared to its ASEAN neighbors.
