Metawear is a small, lightweight piece of hardware with Bluetooth low energy and multiple onboard sensors like an accelerometer, gyroscope, light sensor, and temperature sensor. It has GPIO pins and does not require firmware development. Android and iOS libraries are available to access Metawear's sensors without needing Bluetooth or hardware experience. While developing apps for Metawear, the main difficulties were a lack of clear documentation for its Bluetooth services and characteristics as well as commands structure. These issues were solved by adding logs to trace Bluetooth commands, implementing a request queue, adding timeouts, and repeatedly testing a sample app.

This session presents a simple, human-based approach to create test suites targeting multiple points of contact in a data solution. Commonly, an enterprise will pick a data processing solution with heavy GUIs because it can make an easy to understand workflow around data. However, those solutions still are not able to verify the simplest use case, i.e. “If I put data into a solution to process data, then I should get a desired result.”
FIS will demonstrate and teach you how to build a unique testing solution on top of Apache Spark. Under its solution, FIS can actually prove to users in their organization that when they put data in, they get the correct result out. They can also enlist their entire team from product owner to developer to write complete unit tests. OpenTelemetry For GitOps: Tracing Deployments from Git Commit to Production
GitOps, with tools like Argo and Flux, are preferred platform tools managing configuration in cloud native environments. But it is hard to troubleshoot a failed deployment of a complex application as there is no built-in deployment lifecycle observability, standardized hooks nor the concept of an application vs individual workloads.
The CNCF project Keptn addresses those challenges by extending the Kubernetes Pod scheduler to provide OpenTelemetry Traces and Prometheus metrics for end-2-end deployment observability. Keptn introduces automated application-aware pre- and post-deployment lifecycle hooks to enforce dependency checks, send notifications or evaluates SLOs that otherwise need a custom K8s operator.

Event driven actors - lessons learned
This document summarizes lessons learned from three cases using event-driven architectures. In the first case, research found that an EDA improved maintainability by reducing changes needed and easing addition of new components. The second case was a research project that highlighted challenges like timing problems and difficult debugging, but also found adding new functionality was easy. The third case was a client project where experiences showed the event bus can be simple and components can be easily stubbed for testing, but configuring is more complex than just measuring events. Overall conclusions are that an EDA lessens interdependence and improves extensibility.

OpenTelemetry For GitOps: Tracing Deployments from Git Commit to Production
GitOps, with tools like Argo and Flux, are preferred platform tools managing configuration in cloud native environments. But it is hard to troubleshoot a failed deployment of a complex application as there is no built-in deployment lifecycle observability, standardized hooks nor the concept of an application vs individual workloads.
The CNCF project Keptn addresses those challenges by extending the Kubernetes Pod scheduler to provide OpenTelemetry Traces and Prometheus metrics for end-2-end deployment observability. Keptn introduces automated application-aware pre- and post-deployment lifecycle hooks to enforce dependency checks, send notifications or evaluates SLOs that otherwise need a custom K8s operator.

Event driven actors - lessons learned
This document summarizes lessons learned from three cases using event-driven architectures. In the first case, research found that an EDA improved maintainability by reducing changes needed and easing addition of new components. The second case was a research project that highlighted challenges like timing problems and difficult debugging, but also found adding new functionality was easy. The third case was a client project where experiences showed the event bus can be simple and components can be easily stubbed for testing, but configuring is more complex than just measuring events. Overall conclusions are that an EDA lessens interdependence and improves extensibility.

Now we're writing code to manage our infrastructure with tools like Puppet we are effectively developing software. One of the wonderful aspects to this is that we have the world of software development quality best practices to draw on in order to achieve a high rate of change while not compromising on reliability. Writing tests for infrastructure code, and having them execute automatically as part of a continuous integration pipeline, is a key element to this and is the focus for this talk.
But how do you get started on this? What are some tools to help? How should we think about this problem? This talk will provide an overview of the different types of tests that can be written, from small unit tests to integration and acceptance testing. It will focus on integration testing where existing monitoring checks can provide a useful starting point.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.
