Calling on the Presidents: Tales Their Houses Tell. A
collaboration between Mr. Beim-Esche and his wife

 President Andrew Jackson's birthplace has been under dispute
for many years. His Scottish-born father died during the
pregnancy of Jackson's mother, Betty. Betty Jackson traveled to
South Carolina to Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church for the
burial of her husband. On her way back, Betty gave birth to
Andrew at either the George McCamie cabin in what is now
North Carolina or at the Crawford Plantation in South Carolina.
Regardless of his actual birthplace, Andrew Jackson grew up in
tumultuous times. He was imprisoned and lost his brothers and
mother during the American Revolutionary War, which was
waged in the Carolinas from 1778 to 1781.
Jackson ultimately launched a successful career as an attorney,
a US senator, a military leader, and president of the United
States. Aspects of Jackson's life are showcased today at the
Hermitage, a well-preserved farm in Nashville, Tennessee,
where Jackson lived with his family for many years.
