Andrew Goodwin published a book outlining his theory that music videos contain seven common characteristics. These include demonstrating genre traits, having a relationship between lyrics and visuals, synchronizing music and visuals, including close-ups of artists per record label demands, developing recurring iconography, frequently referencing the notion of looking, and often including intertextual references. Goodwin studied many music videos to develop this theory of common traits found within the genre.
