There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. The tone and atmosphere

4. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE LYRICS AND THE VISUALS
In most ways, the lyrics definitely match the visuals. This helps as the audience to know
more about what the music video is about and what they are trying to demonstrate. Even
though throughout the whole music video, it is only in one location, it sill intrigues the
audience as you can see through their actions with their hands or props what they are
talking about. With the plain white background as their location throughout, the audience
can still know that they are talking about girls with the use of them throughout the video.
Also their location helps the audience just to focus on what the artists are doing which then
again helps the audience to concentrate on their actions.
The examples that I have used all relate to Goodwin's theory. The first example that I have
used “Can I talk to you” by looking at the visuals alone, you see that he is talking with the
actions that he is portraying and also because of the way he is standing. The side view of
the music artist lets us know that he is not talking to us as the audience. Another example
which I have chosen is “To be the hottest girl” you know that this is a clear visual and lyric
link because of how close the two characters are in this music video. You can see the clear
attraction between the two and just because you do not know the exact words, the
audience still know what is going on in the music video just by looking at the visuals.
With this particular music video, it is amplified where the meaning of the song are added by
the visuals. This applies to all of my examples which I have demonstrated. If these were
not amplified, then the audience may struggle to know which way to take this as a whole of
a music video.

5. MUSIC VIDEOS DEMONSTRATE GENRE CHARACTERISTICS
Throughout a Hip Hop R&B music video, you will notice
that a boy band will typically display a genre
characteristic such as a dance routine. Here this is
shown in many of their shots. In the first shot which I
have picked out shows how the band have brought
women into their video, which instantly shows the
audience what their song is conveying, just by the
simple dance routine which is involved.
The second clip is where they have the whole members in
one shot dancing in cinq. This shows how they are in
unity and how they become one when they are singing.
It also shows how they are all equal band members as
they are all doing the same thing.
So far we have seen the band members dancing the same
when the chorus is playing. However, when each
individual band member is singing, you see different
routines from individual members. This shows that just
because they are a band, they can have their individual
style and personalities shine through in a music video.
Overall, I think that these dance routines which the boy
band have incorporated show the typical genre

6. MUSIC VIDEOS DEMONSTRATE CHARACTERISTICS
Another characteristic is the exploitation of women in this particular music genre. You see this clearly
throughout of the whole music video as the boy band are constantly referring to women, as even the
song is called „Hottest Girl In The World‟. Boy bands often relate their music to women as that is their
target audience.
The first shot which I had chosen to talk about is where the shot type is focused straight to the woman's
chest. This shows how they want the women to be portrayed. This particular angle cuts out the head of
the woman which conveys how the boy band are thinking and may not show the personalities of the
women as hey may not be as important for the song. The shot also conveys the type of woman they are
talking about with the low cut top which helps the audience to understand what the music video is trying
to show.
The next shot is a two shot of a band member and a woman. This shows how this could convey how the
band members are being flirty towards the opposite sex. Here, they are referred to sexual objects as
the y are only to be seen dancing and looking at with the band members.
The final shot is simply of a woman wearing short clothes, which is what they are talking about in their song.
It also may show again how the women are portraying to be sexual objects as this is a long shot of
what she is wearing.

Within the music video, there are various shots which represent the genre of the
boy band. They have a range of shots, but the one which is mainly used is the
mid shot of the boy band. This shows how the boy band are in unity and are
overall equal with each other. It also lets the audience see what they want to see
which is he whole of the boy band together.
They also use long shots to help the audience to establish who is who in the band
and also allows us to see what they are doing. They also have individual shots
which helps the audience to establish their own individual personalities as
people and not just as a typical joined boy band.

The overall boy band have a visual style
throughout the whole of the music video.
Here, you can see that they are all wearing
black and white, which helps the audience to
understand that they are one and together as
a band. This is a typical for a boy band as
they are signified usually as one and not as
four individual boy band members.
Overall, I feel that their visual style helps the
audience to know what sort of personalities
are involved within the boy band.

9. FREQUENTLY REFERENCE TO NOTION OF LOOKING
As I have previously mentioned within the genre characteristics, I have shown
how women are shown as sex objects throughout the whole of the music video
as this is what boy bands are known for typically doing.
The shots are cropped down to only some of the woman's body parts which
want to be shown for the viewers, this gives off a sense of how the boy band are
portraying and viewing the women, which overall relates to the notion of looking.
The constant referral to women show how influencing they can be when it comes to
boy band music videos. They are shown to be inferior to men which would
overall relate and attract their target audience.

10. INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCE
Throughout the music video there is no reference to films, TV programmes or any
other music videos. So this theory does not apply to this boy band as their
setting is just simple using a plain and simple way to express their music video.
This also overall shows how they may not want all of the reference as hey just
want to portray their music and focus in on that rather than involving other
references.
