Ancient Greece was dominated by two city-states, Athens and Sparta. Athens established a direct democracy and prioritized cultural and intellectual pursuits, while Sparta was a militaristic monarchy. Key events included the Trojan War described in Homer's epics, the Persian Wars including battles at Marathon and Thermopylae, and the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta which marked the end of Greece's Golden Age. During this period philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle developed new ways of thinking that still influence us today.
