✣ Ancient greeks wore a chlamys, a
piece of clothing pinned at the right
shoulder or the front, worn with
short chiton by much younger men.
Rectangular or square in shape, the
chlamys was thrown around the
shoulders, and fastened with a
bronze pin. They wore a peplos
folded over, and hanging across the
top of the doric chiton. Ancient
greeks used borders to create
drapery interest. Tubular in shape,
the upper edge of the peplos was
turned down at the waist, and was
tied on both shoulders.

most mischievous of the Olympian
gods, he was also their herald and
messenger.

VERSACE’S GLADIATORS OUTFIT FOR
MEN
✣ The Old Romans would have loved Versace’s new menswear spring/summer
collection 2013. Sexy and muscular models hit the runway dressed as
gladiators and modern boxers. Versace’s strong, heroic and glamorous man
wears Roman sandals, golden belts and tunics with beautiful digital Versace
prints.
✣ According to Donatella Versace, there are too little gladiators in the world.
“There should be more of them. The collection is a hymn to the fighting spirit,
the daily survival. Young people must react.”

VERSACE’S GLADIATORS OUTFIT FOR
MEN
✣ This Collection focuses on athletic shapes, featherweight
fabrications, and plenty of movement. The billowing Versace silk
shirts of yore were transposed to fluttering floor-length parkas—
some slung over flesh-colored jerseys, some just slung over flesh.
✣ the collection’s rich shades of blue, claret, jasper green, and Tyrian
purple, and they began to resemble the airborne drapery in
Renaissance paintings. Crossed with, maybe, a modern Olympian.
Versace loves a Greek god—either on her clothes, or inside them.

An inspiration to contemporary
designers:
✣ From the history of fashion apparels, fashion styles repeat itself.
Ancient Greek culture has influenced modern fashion designers
over and over. A cylindrical piece of cloth can be made into a dress
and a top with a morphing neckline. A little black dress can be worn
forward, or backwared with caped sleeves. Cone shaped cloth
converts to a shirt and skirt; reversible. Designer's new muse
captures ancient Greek beauty with elegant draped shapes to rival
classically fluid forms.
9
An inspiration to contemporary
designers:
✣ With a flurry of ruffles, pleats, and drapes, Greek clothing displays a
spectacular look in fashion shows. The most interesting aspect of
Grecian clothing is that it can be twisted, tied, and wrapped to
create different looks. Most common influences are motifs of Greek
mythology on clothing, and jewellery.
✣ The Ionic chiton apparel was revived by Edwardian fashion designer
who created gorgeous tea gowns. It was much adored by women as
it was comfortable, relaxed, and showed off their feminine features.
10
✣ New Classical. For Spring/Summer 2017,
Mary Katrantzou looked introspectively
to Greece, the country of her birth.
Exploring its rich history, mythology and
culture, she dug deep into her own
work. This collection is an archaeological
exploration, unearthing the classics of
Katrantzou.
✣ In her collection the impact that the
traditional Grecian prints have had on
contemporary fashion. In her SS17
collection, Mary directly referenced her
Greek heritage by building a collection
full of illustrations of stories from
antiquity. Mary is one of many who has
found inspiration from the terracotta-
based narratives.

“Chanel does Ancient Greece”
18
✣ Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director of Chanel, usually gets inspired on the road. He takes
Chanel’s cruise collections to beautiful destinations and never misses a chance to collect
impressions from the local culture and incorporate them into his further designs. Chanel’s
resort caravansary visited Dubai, Seoul, and Havana in the last couple of years.
✣ However, for his Fall 2017 Collection, he decided to stay home, in Paris and provide his
audience in Grad Palais with an outstanding fashion show experience and mesmerizing
creations. In honor of his Resort 2018 Collection, La Modernité de l’Antiquité (The
Modernity of Antiquity ) Karl brought the ancient Greek spirit in Paris, once again in Grand
Palais.
19
The Beginning Of The Idea
20
21
✣ Vogue SpokesPerson: The lucky audience was taken to an Elysian ideal of a Greek ruin. We
sat beneath 11 crumbling columns that sheltered rosemary and sage growing between the
cracked flagstones and a gnarled old olive tree set into a rocky outcrop.
✣ This was a site under turn-of-the-20th-century archaeological setting, A marble Venus
beneath it has been placed, The Aegean sparkled beneath us on a darkening horizon
dappled with distant isles.
22
The Setting
23
24
✣ Lagerfeld’s was an imagined Ancient Greece set in the present As he said “The criteria of
beauty in Ancient then Classical Greece still holds true. There have never been more
beautiful representations of women. Or more beautiful columns. The entire Renaissance,
in fact, was based on antiquity.”
✣ As Coco Chanel herself, and the architects of the columned and porticoed Grand Palais,
once did, Lagerfeld was applying the lessons from then to the context of now. Regrettably
for the Greek gods, no Greek goddess ever prowled poolside in strapped golden high heels,
a ruched bikini, and a transparent cloak, nor a laurel leaf chiffon dress with an inbuilt
cloaklet, nor some gorgeous full plissé trousers—super-culottes—worn with coin-fastened
silk shirting. But contemporary Greek vacationers will no doubt be delighted to do so.
