Pyramids By Paul Lubi 8-17
Number and location of pyramids There are about 81-112 pyramids in Egypt today. In 1842 Karl Richard Lepsius made a list of pyramids. He only counted 67 but more were found since his time. Some pyramids now are piles of rubbish. Most pyramids are found in north or south Egypt. Most pyramids took 27 years to build.
Great Pyramid of Giza The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest and tallest pyramid in the Giza Necropolis. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only one remaining from the 7 wonders of the world. This pyramid was built for the 4 th dynasty egyptian pharoah, Pharoah Khufu and took over 20 years to make at around 2560 BC.
Abu Rawash Pyramid Abu Rawash is located at the north of Egypt. Abu Rawash is the mostly ruined Pyramid of Djedefre, son and successor of Khufu. Some people thought the Abu Rawash Pyramid wasn’t completed but it was, it was actually one of the largest pyramids in the world.
Saqqara Pyramid This pyramid was one of the earliest attempts of making a pyramid. This pyramid was conducted by the son of Ramesses II. Saqqara is also the location of the incomeplete step pyramid of Djozer’s successor Sekhemkhet which is also known as the buried pyramid. Archeologists say if this pyramid was completed then it would be larger than Djozer’s.
Dahshur This area is the most important pyramid field in Egypt outside Giza and Saqqara. In 1996, this site was unaccessable because it was a military base. This pyramid is the only pyramid that has limestone casing. Also at Dahshur is the pyramid known as the Black pyramid and Amenemhet III.
