This document analyzes the microeconomic factors of two important agricultural goods in Bangladesh: sugar cane and baby corn. 3. Introduction

Bangladesh is an agricultural country

About ninety percent of it’s population depends on agriculture wholly
or partially

The agricultural products of Bangladesh can chiefly be classified into
two categories -

cash crops and

food crops

Jute is the main cash crop of Bangladesh

The chief food crop of Bangladesh is rice

8. Current Status of Sugar Cane in
Bangladesh

The current production of sugar in Bangladesh is only about 5% of total demand.

About 20% demand is fulfilled by jaggery production mainly from sugarcane and
remaining 75% of total requirement is fulfilled by importation.

The main causes of lower sugar production of the industry include less supply of
sugarcane in the factories and very poor sugar recovery. The area under cane
cultivation is drastically reduced due to pressure of cereals and other short-duration
crops which cause lower amount of sugarcane production.

9. Production of Sugar Cane in Bangladesh

It is very important industrial crops accounting for 66% of sugar
production in the world

The contribution of sugarcane to national GDP about 0.78%

About 5 million people depend on sugar cane cultivation in Bangladesh

It costs about Tk 20 thousand to cultivate this variety of sugarcane on one
bigha of land, which brings output worth Tk 60 to 70 thousand

10. News of Sugar Cane in Bangladesh

In July 23, 2018, The Daily Star published a news ”HYV
sugarcane brings smile to Gaibandha growers” where it says
that, ”Sugarcane growers of Gobindaganj upazila in the district
and some areas of neighbouring Borga are earning better profit
by farming HYV sugarcane Q-69 that is used for making juice
and directly chewing.”

11. Export & Import

In 2017 BSFIC was imported more than 50,000 tons of sugar to
meet the deficit in the market also Sugar (cane or beet) imported
worth $1.1 billion (Up 67.7%)

In 2017 The government has allowed two private refiners to
export a total of 57,273 tonnes of sugar this fiscal year,
according to commerce ministry officials.

12. Others

At present sugar can is cultivate in about 100 countries. The
main countries are India, China, Brazil, Mexico etc.

In Bangladesh sugarcane was grown about 0.38 million acres of
land

Baby corn (Zea Mays) is a popular
Asian vegetable

Baby corn is also known as young
corn or baby sweetcorn

It is harvested from corn/ maze
early while the stalks/ ears are still
small and immature

Its ears color is light yellow and is
10 to 12 cm long

14. Current Status of Baby Corn in
Bangladesh

In 2008 Bangladesh Bank announce Baby corn as cash crop of
Bangladesh

In 2012 Baby corn has gained a lot of popularity among the
farmers

From 2015- present baby corn are economically cultivating in
Sadar upazila of Lalmonirhat district

Different NGOs are helping farmers to cultivate baby corn

15. Production of Baby Corn in Bangladesh

In one bigha land from 1 ton to 1200kg baby corn can be
produced

In Bangladesh farmers cultivate baby corn thrice a year, and the
production is plentiful

In evey year Bangladesh produce about 774000kg baby corn in
215 bigha land (NGO source)

It cost Tk 9,000 to cultivate baby corn on one bigha of land in
each period, which brings output worth Tk 19,000 to Tk 20,000

16. News of Baby Corn in Bangladesh

Many article about baby corn were published in newspaper –
The Daily Star, The Ittefaqe, Bonik Barta and so on.

In May 27, 2015, The Daily Star published a news ”Baby corn
farming gains – Farmers need market facilities” where it says
that, ”Cultivation of baby corn, an item used for producing baby
food, is gaining popularity in Sadar upazila of Lalmonirhat
district.”

17. Export & Import

Baby Corn Exported in many Asian countries like - China,
Korea, japan, Malaysia,etc and also many european countries
like – Uk, Us etc

It is export in frozen form, canned form etc.

Bangladesh import baby corn as child food, cereal etc. from
Thailand, India and from other countries.

Banladesh also import baby corn seed from Thailand to grow it
economically.

18. Others

Most of baby corn is grown in Thailand ,Where it also known as
candle corn

It’s popular for many chines dishes and mostly supplied in
different Chinese resturants , Five star hotels and other main
clients.

In Bangladesh it’s mainly grown from BARI Hybride Corn 1 &
Suvra Corn seed.

19. Barriers

Because of excess interfearance of middleman farmers are not
gaining the profit they expect

The main causes of lower sugar production of the industry
include less supply of sugarcane in the factories and very poor
sugar recovery.

Natural disasters are also a main barrier for cultivating
agricultural goods, like – flood and other disaster

Farmers lack of proper knowledge about seed, fertilizer etc.

20. Recommendation

In view of the fact that agriculture is the backbone of our
national economy, top-priority should be given for the
development of our agriculture.

Our govt. Should take necessary steps to remove all the barriers
that stand against of our agricultural development

Our govt. Should engaged unemployed people in this field to get
rid of unemployment problem

Farmers should be taught the use of scientific methods of
cultivation, so that they can grow better crops

21. Conclusion

our agriculture sector developing day by day. Our agriculture
products are more demanded day by day in foreign market. It’s
remove our unemployment.

Bangladesh Agriculture is now in the process of transformation
from subsistence farming into commercial farming. Bangladesh
has already entered into the European Market for export of
vegetables and other high value crops.

Also after analyzing sugar cane and baby corn we can say that
these two goods are very important for economic growth of
Bangladesh as both goods are cash crop of Bangladesh.
