LEGALLY BLONDE

CONVENTIONS
The movie starts with no music except the roar of the
tiger from the MGM logo. 
 Straight after that roar, you hear the song  "Perfect Day"
by Hoku, its a non-diegetic sound that is played
throughout the opening sequence of Legally Blonde. It
immediately sets a mood for the audience which is
happiness, the song as well sounds girly and gives an idea
of a chick flick movie as its catchy to females. The lyrics
in the song makes you feel good and the tune is
uplifting.  Also, the use of a catchy song creates the
impression that everything is perfect and the used of
dialogue in the song, such as shopping, represents a
typical girl and the wealth they have.

STUDIO/PRODUCTION
COMPANY:
GENRE, Title of film, Star Billings
The film starts out with an extreme close up and out of focus on blonde hair moving from side
to side.  Straight away after the Title of the film appears in a girly like handwriting style, they
aswell dotted the I's in the title "legally blonde" with hearts, this style appeals to the target
audience which is teenage girls as well as signifies the genre of the movie.  When the title of
the movie is over we see the girl brushing her hair, this make the audience realize who the
protagonist is. The blonde hair at the start of the opening sequence directly links to the title
of the film " Dlegally blonde". The audience is now able to understand what the title means.
Then a shot of a letter appears with a name "ELLE" on it. The shots kept switching between
the name on the envelope and the Blonde girl getting dressed. This hints us the protagonist's
name is ELLE.
 
The repetitive use of the color pink in the typography, props,
and setting combined with the extreme close up shots of the
hair brushing set the protagonist up as a STEREOTYPE. The
audience assumes she is going to be a typically feminine in her
appearance, with long blonde hair/use of makeup and in her
interests such as shopping and gossip. We expect to meet
someone who is materialistic and vain.

HOW IS THE GENRE ESTABLISHED IN
THE OPENING SEQUENCE?
Throughout the opening sequence, a blonde girl is shown doing.  The mise-en-scene and
props also. Suggests a typical girl as perfume, hairbrush, nail polish, shavers and heels
represent a girl character. Also, her brushing her hair suggests a Barbie doll character as she
cares about her appearance. The use of costume such as high heels etc, is also what girls
wear and suggests the film is targeted at the teenage girl's audience. This helps the audience
to figure out the genre which is chick flick.
