Value stream mapping in ethiopian garemnt industrykibrom G
Abstract
This research aimed to use and apply lean tools as ways of improving manufacturing
systems that lead to reduction of wastes and reduction of lead time. The focus of this study
is to investigate and to minimize different waste by using a lean tool which called VALUE
STREAM MAPPING on a polo shirt in ALMEDA TEXTILE P.L.C in knitted department.
VSM can be applied to better visualizing the wastes and to minimize which became
positive results such as reducing wastes in inventory, transportation, waiting and defects.
The research conducted in ALMED TEXTILE P.L.C in POLO SHIRT using personal
interviews, secondary data and observations. The current state map was developed after
making necessary observations and calculations. Then various improvement proposals had
been identified based on Lean Manufacturing theories and the future state map was
developed. and I reduce the production lead time for one pcs it takes 40 minute if we
applying the proposed VSM it almost takes 35 minute. I recommended to change the
production system from progressive bundling system in to single piece flow system it
increases the production rate up to 11% of the production

27. LIMITATION
Safety problems:
• Routes are blocked by storage materials
• Machine layout is often staggered
• Lack of signage for escape route
• Doors are not self-closing and often do not open along the direction of
escape
• Fire exit or emergency staircase lacks proper maintenance
• Lack of proper exit route to reach the place of safety.
27
28. LIMITATION
• There are some other problems which are associated with this sector.
• Those are lack of marketing tactics, absence of easily on-hand middle
management, lack of training organizations for industrial workers.
28
29. SUGGESTION
• Garment industry is embracing more and more IT based technology.
• It may be ERP systems or other technology solutions.
• If you have good understanding of IT and can develop innovative tools
that can solve exporter’s problem such pattern making solutions, real time
data collection, production planning, material management or it can be
anything.
• Your development must bring measurable improvement in garment
manufacturer’s business as a whole or in department level.
29
30. SUGGESTION
• In this company, the worker are working without any kind of protection.
But it is very dangerous for worker.
• While working they must take some certain security like- when they work
they can wear a face max, while they do iron they can wear gloves on their
hands.
• Especially during sewing they should be more conscious about their work.
