This document summarizes research on ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA). AOA were discovered to play a significant role in ammonia oxidation in some environments, alongside ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB). AOA belong to the archaeal phylum Thaumarchaeota and are ubiquitous. Their biochemistry of ammonia oxidation is unique and differs from AOB, with the product and pathway remaining unresolved. AOA generate greenhouse gases and may explain high methane levels in oceans. Future research will further genome sequencing and understanding of AOA biochemistry.
