The Spanish-American War was fought between Spain and the United States over control of Cuba and the Philippines. US troops landed in Cuba and defeated Spanish forces, establishing US control over Cuba. The US navy blockaded Santiago de Cuba and defeated the Spanish navy, either sinking or stranding their ships. As a result, Cuba was placed under US protection and the Philippines were purchased from Spain for $20 million.
