American football is played on a rectangular field with goal lines and yard lines marking distances. Each team has 11 players who try to score points by advancing the ball into the end zone or kicking it between goalposts. The game consists of four 15-minute quarters. On each play, the offensive team has four attempts to advance the ball 10 yards, while the defense tries to stop them in order to gain possession of the ball.
