The Griffith City Library has two non-fiction collections for adults and juniors. The adult collection is called "WTF!?" and has been running for 2 years, while the junior collection is called "DYK?" and has been running for 6 months. Both collections provide interesting facts on various topics in short formats.
Griffith City Library has been working hard to improve our non-fiction circulation statistics. In 2009 we began the DYK (Did You Know?) junior collection. As a result of its success we began the adult WTF!? (What the Fact) collection in October 2011. Here is a copy of the branding we have used. All the books have a separate shelf location depending on their collection and are sticked with the above label after they have been covered. We can transfer items in and out whenever we want to, but have found that since creation we have only added to the WTF collection and done one deselection of approx 100 items to the DYK collection.
As you can see the DYK collection has been running two years. Currently there are 523 items in this collection. (photo taken in Feb 2012). Over the past two years this collection code has been borrowed 4151 times. At its current stock rate that is a 7.9 circulation rate. As you can see the shelving is all face out. In easy reach of youngsters and is located in the childrens section. Staff also love it as it is not filed in any kind of order so its easy to put away!
The WTF collection has been running 6 months. We currently have 327 items in the collection. I had IT run the statistics in early Feb. At that time collection had been borrowed 1504 times at a circulation rate of 4.6. Since then the statistics were run four weeks later. Items have been borrowed 1716 times at a circulation rate of 5.3. We again have aimed for face out shelving and have made sure that its location is close to the entrance and our front desk. It has had great success with males especially, and includes a range of items from true crime, gardening and cooking, to biographies and horoscopes.
In Aug 2011 staff had a planning afternoon and came up with a number of events run outside our normal shpere for the national year of reading. We are aiming to have at least one new item run each month of this year. Our booklet was produced by a graphic designer and was launched at a 3 Dec dinner in the library for 200 guests. The NSW governor attended as did Australian author Melina Marchetta. It was a great platform for getting people interested and the hard work has continued to pay off with people asking about NYOR library events since the start of this year.
So far this year we have started with the Book Crossing concept of travelling books. 100 books were released and so far have made it to Perth, France, India, Scotland and Tahiti. In Feb we had a I love my library short entry competition. It will be judged soon, with prizes being book vouchers at our local book store. We also had blind date with a book for the week leading up to Valentines Day. The brown paper wrapped books have been a huge success over the past few years and will continue to run this easy program. We also launched out Never judge a book by its movie kits. Almost 50 kits were made up containing a book and matching dvd for a three week loan. So far proving very popular!
Finally this month we have Around the World in 80 books. For adults we created a map of 80 titles based around the world and have made that booklet available on our website. We also created around the world in 80 reads for youth and junior combined. The youth have 40 titles that can be viewed in booklet form on our website and the remaining 40 are made up of junior and picture books. If you are interested in viewing any of our events, our NYOR booklet or the map of where our books have currently been ‘found’ please visit our website! www.griffith.nsw.gov.au/library
