This document discusses advances that have been made in dental amalgam materials. It describes new amalgam alloys that have been developed with compositions like gallium alloys, bonded amalgam, fluoridated amalgam, consolidated silver alloy, low mercury alloy, and indium containing amalgam. Each new type of amalgam aims to improve properties like strength, creep, corrosion and mercury vapor release compared to traditional dental amalgams. Specific advantages and disadvantages are outlined for gallium alloys and other new amalgam materials.
