Alvarado’s racial
stereotypes (1978)
Exotic
Ethnic groups are presented as exotic
My example of an exotic
character is the singer Nicki
Minaj. She is always in the
media because of how
different she is. For example her
hair or the way she dresses.
However the stereotype of her
is quite negative because the
media never really say anything
good about her or her music.
Instead they just focus on her
look. However in the music
industry she appears to be in
the dominant group as she
makes good music so is
respected for that. An example
of a character like this is Kim
from EastEnders.
Dangerous
Ethic groups are presented as dangerous
My example of a dangerous
character is Yusef Khan from
EastEnders. He appeared to be a
dangerous man as he was
always in fights, including
slapping his ex wife. This made
the audience have a sense of
fear that something bad was
going to happen when he was
there. This is definitely a negative
representation of his ethnicity as
it suggests everyone with the
same ethnicity as him have
similar characteristics to Yusef.
On the other hand though it
does show his ethnic group as
dominant as he was always in
control of the situation he was in.
Humorous
Ethic groups are represented as funny
Fat Boy is a character in the TV
Drama EastEnders. His
character is quite a humour
character and he doesn’t
really take a lot of things
seriously. This is the main reason
people see him as quite a
funny character because he is
always mucking about making
a lot of jokes. This gives him
and his country Trinidad and
Tobago quite a positive
stereotype that they are quite
light-hearted and like to have
fun. However he seems to be a
subordinate character as some
people walk over him as he
doesn’t tae anything seriously.
Pitied
Ethic groups are represented as weak and in
need – we feel sorry for them
Niger is a country in Africa. It is a
very poor country that have
very little money and everyone
there live on the streets. This is
why our country have a lot of
pity for them and have charity's
such as Children in Need to
raise money for them. This
means their lifestyle is
stereotyped to be very bad as
there a lots of diseases and
deaths there. Overall Niger are
a subordinate group as they
cannot be in control of their
life's as they don’t have the
money to be able to.

Alvarado’s racial stereotypes (1978)

He appeared to be a dangerous man as he was always in fights, including slapping his ex wife. This made the audience have a sense of fear that something bad was going to happen when he was there. This is definitely a negative representation of his ethnicity as it suggests everyone with the same ethnicity as him have similar characteristics to Yusef. On the other hand though it does show his ethnic group as dominant as he was always in control of the situation he was in.
