Stereotypes are generalized assumptions about groups of people. This document discusses common stereotypes of single mothers, "chavs", nerds, Americans, and Italians through analyzing various images. Stereotypes can be both positive and negative, providing simplistic views of complex groups of people.

1. Stereotypes are a recognised ‘type’ of person
based on appearance and perhaps behaviour.

2. This image represents a single mother who
looks upset with her child’s head on her
shoulder. This could mean that they are the only
ones for each other and they look upset
probably about the fact that they are alone. The
image itself is black and white which could
represent her previous life which her led her to
this situation of being a single mother. The child
looks around 2-4 years old and you could see
that she is waiting for that father/ or support.
If people have a look at this image two types of emotions would occur, sympathy or
guilt and shame. Many people may assume that the father has left the mother with
this child and therefore this mother and child are not getting the love and affection
and joy that they should be. However others may think the mother may be the
cause of this and now is being forced to stay with this kid as she has no emotions
showing on her face. There are also many other assumptions you could make and
judge this image but yet again it is the way the media has represented it.

3. This image shows a picture of chav which is a stereotype
of some people. They tend to be arrogant and aggressive
young teenagers which you could see from the image
above. Her hairstyle plays a major role of her identity
which labels her as a chav and the pink hoodie tells us
she is a young teenager with her chains. The media has
represented her as the main person and the background is
all blurred. Her face expression isn’t too friendly it shows
us that she isn’t bothered either of what people think of her
or what’s going on around her.
The negative stereotype about chavs could be that they tend not be as intelligent
or have a reputation. They tend to have immature behaviour with abusive
languages. You could associate all this with her outfit and her facial expressions.
The positive stereotype could be that they are brave enough to be the few
individuals as they are. Also they wouldn’t care what others think of them
regardless making gestures. They may also be known by some people that they
are very strong and big hearted towards there fashion trends and daily life
routine.

4. This is a image of a nerd who is very concentrated
in his reading with great pleasure as you can tell
my his facial expressions. His hair is very neatly
gelled towards the side. They are also stereotyped
for their greasy hair. He has big glasses which has
tape in the middle to keep them together assuming
they have been broken before. He is reading the
book up from very close and point each word with
his finger.
They are normally associated with either computer (game) addicts or library freaks.
They are also pocket protectors as you could tell by the tape on his glasses. Instead of
buying new pairs he has taped them. The positive stereotype could be that they tend
to be very clever and concentrated in their studies. Also they can be on the good side
of their teachers as they spends inordinate amounts of time on unpopular or vague
hobbies.

5. This is a American man who is having a massive
burger with chips laid on top of it. Instantly people
would comment on this picture and say this obese
man is from America as Americans are usually fat
and good for nothing that eating fast food. That are
also known as lazy and this image connotes that
rather than having home made food he is eating a
large burger and is eager to fit it in his mouth.
Some people also stereotype about them having a
very big mouth not just for eating but talking too.
Most Americans are know as being big and they think big too. They are also very
loud and proud of themselves. This could be a positive stereotype that they are
always proud and say what they have to say. They tend to be ignorant as you could
tell by this image that this man doesn’t really care who is looking at him as he's
busy with his burger. Moreover they are blinded with money as you could just
imagine the cost of this huge burger.

6. This is a Italian man as you could tell by his looks
and sense of fashion. They are know for there style
of fashion and their hair combed back. People also
think they are possessive as you could tell my his
attitude and facial expressions that he is very
arrogant. The positive stereotype is that they are
easy to attract girls and they tend to be very
romantic and great lovers. However they cheat on
their spouses and keep them pregnant. They can
be egotistical, infantile, and unrefined. As you can
tell by his legs in this image they are also known
for being hairy. Although you cannot see from this
image but they are very good cooks and are real
fond of eating pasta and spaghetti.
As you can see this man is near a river bank and people say they love to travel
even though they don’t speak many foreign languages. They are also stereotyped
about their strictly black Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses. The positive stereotype is
that overall they are concerning and family is important to them.
