Alum, or aluminum sulfate, is commonly used in water treatment plants to purify drinking water by causing suspended particles to clump together and settle out. It is applied to lakes to reduce phosphorus levels and prevent algal blooms by binding phosphorus molecules and forming an insoluble floc layer on the lake bottom. Phosphorus enters lakes from external sources in the watershed and from internal sources within the lake sediments, where it is recycled. Alum treatment binds and removes phosphorus from both sources to improve water quality.
