Going for Gold? The RCUK Policy on Access to Research OutputsOpenExeter
The document summarizes the RCUK (Research Councils UK) policy on open access to research outputs. The key points are:
1. The policy was developed based on recommendations from the Finch report to expand public access to research publications funded by the UK government.
2. It defines open access as unrestricted online access to research papers that allows for free reading, searching, and text/data mining with proper attribution.
3. The policy requires funding recipients to publish in open access compliant journals, which provide either gold open access with a CC-BY license or green open access with a maximum 6-12 month embargo and CC-BY-NC license.
4. Research councils will
The document discusses how new tools and technologies are changing the scientific research environment and researcher communications. It notes that digital tools like electronic journals, the internet, and identifiers are transforming scholarly communications from solely print-based to incorporating new digital information resources. The document also examines how these technologies allow for multidimensional measurements of research activities and outputs. It explores how research evaluation and assessment may change with new needs from different stakeholders. Keywords mentioned that relate to these trends include open access, open science, big data, and altmetrics. The goal of the event is to learn about the latest technologies and discuss their effects on researchers and research as well as potential implications for science and technology policies.
Mendeley:From three guys in a virtual garage to changing the face of science?Kazuhiro Hayashi
On behalf of Victor Henning, CEO of Mendeley, the organizer uploaded his presentation file with his permission. It is for the NISTEP Seminar held on Dec 8th, 2011. (See also http://www.slideshare.net/KazuhiroHayashi/nistep20111208 for introduction)
The organizer asked him,
-introduce his unique bibliography
-introduce [briefly] about the Mendeley
-introduce history of Mendeley from the beginning to the present
-study how to develop something innovative or how to be innovative
-look into the future of scholarly communication thorough Mendeley
Presentation for the introduction at NISTEP Seminar on Dec 8th, 2012. Reviewing some histories and backgrounds of reference management tools, the author guides audiences to be ready to have a main play from Victor Henning, CEO of Mendeley.

The document discusses the benefits of open data in research. It makes three main points:
1) Open data aligns with the public good by increasing research transparency and supporting innovation and economic growth. It removes barriers to data access and promotes data reuse.
2) The digital age has changed research expectations, with openness becoming the new normal. Researchers must make data openly available to avoid being marginalized.
3) Open data fuels data-driven innovation. Examples show businesses creating useful services by combining open research data with their expertise, such as flood risk maps and tools identifying valuable artwork. Supporting open data management and partnerships with industry can maximize these benefits.
OA policies – Where we are and what we know about effectiveness, Lars Bjørnsh...SPARC Europe
Lars Bjørnshauge presented findings from the PASTEUR4OA project on open access policies around the world. The project analyzed 663 open access policies, with most being from institutions in Europe and funders in North America. Strong mandatory policies that require deposit and prohibit waiving open access were found to have higher deposit rates and lower deposit latency compared to weaker policies. However, overall deposit rates of full-text articles into institutional repositories remain low at only 15% on average. While open access policies have proliferated, the goal of providing immediate open access to scholarly articles has not yet been fully achieved, suggesting a need to re-examine open access strategy and policy effectiveness.
The document summarizes feedback from researchers on a proposed taxonomy of contributor roles in research publications. Key findings include:
- Respondents generally agreed with the proposed 14 terms and definitions, with some suggestions for clarification or additional terms.
- Most felt contributor roles should be assigned by the corresponding author and confirmed by other contributors.
- A majority supported expressing degree of contribution for each role on a coarse scale (e.g. substantial/equal/supporting).
- Recommendations included adopting the proposed terms and approach, gathering more input from different fields, and documenting additional feedback.

The Current Status of Open Access to Scholarship in Japansmine
This document summarizes the current status of open access to scholarship in Japan. It discusses the growth of institutional repositories and open access journals in Japan, reaching over 1.5 million full texts. Several major developments in open access policy are noted, including mandates from the Ministry of Education and funders like JSPS. While about half of researchers report publishing in open access journals, their understanding and opinions on open access vary, with some concerns about predatory journals. Overall, Japan has made progress in open access through a collaborative "step-by-step" approach, but further policy implementation and cultural changes may still be needed.
This presentation highlights current web design trends, agile development methodologies, and current trends in library research, user behaviors, and the implications of Lorcan Dempsey's concept of Inside Out libraries and Full Library Discovery on our users' experiences with our library websites.
This presentation looks back at several efforts, conducted in the past fifteen years, aimed at establishing interoperability for web-based scholarly communication. It tries to characterize the perspectives/approaches taken by these efforts and, based upon that, proposes an HATEOS-based approach to interlink scholarly nodes on the web. This was first presented at the Research Data Alliance meeting in Paris, France, September 22 2015.
Koji Ishimoto gives a presentation on front-end engineering. He defines a front-end engineer's responsibilities as including JavaScript, version control with Git, modular code, browser developer tools, command line, templating, CSS preprocessors, testing, automation, code quality and manuals. He discusses common front-end tools, managing tools with Grunt, and tracking speed with tools like WebPageTest to monitor performance. The talk aims to provide an overview of the front-end landscape and importance of performance.
