ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO

Today's Standard:
Standardized testing has been around for
quite awhile; so long that most millennials
can’t remember what was before them.
Although most popularly recognized from
George W. Bush’s “No Child Left Behind”
campaign, the idea of standardized testing
has been around for almost two hundred
years.

However, it wasn’t until
nearly 100 years later that
the first widely adopted
standardized tests were
enacted.
 Contrary to Horace
Mann’s idea, these new
tests were meant to
determine ability rather
than achievement.
In 1845, Horace Mann– an educational pioneer, decided that
rather than use the typical annual oral exams for students to
prove their knowledge, they should instead participate in written
tests. It is believed that Horace Mann’s goal was to find and
replicate the best teaching methods so that all children could
have equal opportunities.
The Beginning 
By 2001, the idea of standardized testing had
taken hold, and the President at the time
enacted a law (NCLB) that required states to
give assessments to all students at select grade
levels in order to receive federal funding.
However, by 2015, there had been so many
complaints and issues with the NCLB that
Congress stripped it of many features and
amendments.
The End
Although it is agreed that NCLB did not work effectively, there is
still no conclusion about what might replace these assessments.
While there are many different ideas for solutions, here are some
of the top discussed choices for replacement.
Alternative Assessments:
This approach allows students to form
small groups for multiple choice tests.
This approach encourages students to
“teach one another” leading to a better
understanding of the materials and allows
teachers to be more creative and more
complex in their question asking. 
Collaborative Testing 
Coined by the lack of student awareness,
online homework and quizzes allow for
teachers, schools, and organizations to
collect data from students during a
semester, a year, and so on. This
eliminates stress from students, and time
for educators while providing insights into
how students learn, how dedicated they
are, plus many other factors.
Stealth
Assessment 
As technology advances, it seems obvious to
use it to enhance learning and decrease
stress. The simulation approach works by
immersing the learner in a “real-life”
scenario to view how they apply their
knowledge to the appropriate context.
SIMULATIONS
Some instructors and organizations believe that
students should be regularly tested, but they
should have a choice in the type of testing they
take. Offering an array of testing options for
students to choose from allows them to align
themselves with the proper testing needed for
their learning types, interests, and future career
fields.

In 1845, Horace Mann– an educational pioneer, decided that rather than use the typical annual oral exams for students to prove their knowledge, they should instead participate in written tests. It is believed that Horace Mann’s goal was to find and replicate the best teaching methods so that all children could have equal opportunities. The Beginning

By 2001, the idea of standardized testing had taken hold, and the President at the time enacted a law (NCLB) that required states to give assessments to all students at select grade levels in order to receive federal funding. However, by 2015, there had been so many complaints and issues with the NCLB that Congress stripped it of many features and amendments. The End

  • 6. This approach allows students to form small groups for multiple choice tests. This approach encourages students to “teach one another” leading to a better understanding of the materials and allows teachers to be more creative and more complex in their question asking.  Collaborative Testing 
  • 7. Coined by the lack of student awareness, online homework and quizzes allow for teachers, schools, and organizations to collect data from students during a semester, a year, and so on. This eliminates stress from students, and time for educators while providing insights into how students learn, how dedicated they are, plus many other factors. Stealth Assessment 
  • 8. As technology advances, it seems obvious to use it to enhance learning and decrease stress. The simulation approach works by immersing the learner in a “real-life” scenario to view how they apply their knowledge to the appropriate context. SIMULATIONS
  • 9. Some instructors and organizations believe that students should be regularly tested, but they should have a choice in the type of testing they take. Offering an array of testing options for students to choose from allows them to align themselves with the proper testing needed for their learning types, interests, and future career fields.
