1. 'All Kathmandu Debate Championship 2015' ends
The All Kathmandu Debate Championship 2015 concluded on January 18 at the Ace Institute of
Technology and Management, Satdobato, with the final debate and prize distribution ceremony.
Rato Bangala School (RBS) won in the final debate against Chelsea International Academy,
while Gaurav Pathak from RBS, Venisha Acharya from St Xavier’s College, and Rajshreee
Upadhaya from RBS were declared the Top 3 Debaters of the championship, respectively.
Twenty-four groups of four debaters representing various institutions participated in AKDC
2015 - the largest modern format based debating tournament in Nepal. The event was organized
jointly by Interact District Council and Debate Yatra, and overseen by the young Debate Yatra
team, including event convener Bishesh Bajracharya and event co-ordinator, Binamrata Sharma.
All debates were conducted in the ‘World Schools Debating Championship’ format and debate
Workshops were held for the participants on January 3-4 at Little Angel’s College, Hattiban.
Participating teams that made it through the group stages faced off in knockout rounds, debating
on a wide range of motions, including impromptu sessions as well. The event concluded with a
debate on the motion “The House supports national minimum wage,” with a democratic panel of
nine trained adjudicators.
The adjudication core had Saurav Bhatta as Chief Adjudicator, along with Deputy Chief
Adjudicators Sandesh Adhikari, Prabin Basyal, and Samiksha Neupane.
The tournament also had Supporting Adjudicators and Adjudicators, among whom the top five –
Rastra Raj Bhandari, Ojaswi Bhattarai, Nitish Pathak, Rajiv Shahi, and Manish Kadel – were
awarded in the closing ceremony.
