2. Radio telescopes
• Are really sensitive
• Instead of seeing light waves, it will make
pictures from radio waves
• Antennas used for tracking and collecting
data from satellites and spaces probes
3. Astronomy
• Allows see back in time,
• Light waves from very distant stars or
galaxies take a long time to travel through
space to our telescopes
• One of the oldest science
• Largest telescopes
4. MeerKAT Array
• Building 64 Radio telescopes
• Thousands of antenae will work together as 1
gigantic instrument
• 10 000 times faster than any other radio
telescope
• Used to understand how stars and galaxies
are formed and how they evolve around time
• When MeerKAT complete Karoo will start to
build 190 SKA phase 1 dishes.
• First 7 dishes complete known as KAT-7
5. S K A
• Built in Africa and Australia
• R20 billion to build it
• Building 64 Radio telescopes
• Finished in 2024
• 100 young scientists involved
6. Fun Facts
• Dark matter occupies 95% of the
universe
• 1 dad in our school involved
