My keynote address from the 2009 ALIA Information Today conference in Sydney, Australia. The title comes from Jane McGonigal's 2008 GDC talk on "games as happiness engines."
As part of Institute of Customer Experience, we are constantly on the look out for opportunities that give us an insight into the future of things. We wanted to explore the concept of “beginner’s mind” which is said to be an attitude of openness, eagerness and lack of preconceptions and realized that it was the mind of a child that we wanted a peek into.
We ideated and devised a unique way of getting children to give us their insights about what they think will happen in the future. The result was a board game called “The Trip to the Future” which we used to conduct “playshops”. This method got us very exciting responses. We would love to take you through the journey.
Presented 2/4/12 to the Publisher's Conference for Commercial Printers in Warrenton, Va. Thanks to Sid Chadwick of Chadwick Consulting (www.chadwickconsulting.com) for the invitation and to all attendees for the engagement!
Second of three parts for a workshop on social media and branding done in Istanbul in June 2011. This part covers current trends fuelled in part or totally by social media. Other parts provide a background on social media, why it is so important for business and how to get started with social media in your business.
A consideration of the role of technology in contemporary Drama Education - delivered as a keynote to the Drama Australia copnference, NIDA, Sydney 2006.

The Playable Museum - Building the Museum of FutureFabio Viola
Museums are extraordinary time machines for travelling into the past, but what about the Present and, above all, the Future? Museum should be the place for creators and entrepreneurs from all around the world, the hose for those can imagine and design the future.
The Interactive culture in the XXI centuryFabio Viola
What does it mean culture today? Where, how, why the younger generations are producing and consuming "culture"? Instagram, Wattpad, videogames are models and rivals of museums and theaters today? Echo chambers (and Filter Bubbles) in Media and Social NetworksPlural (think tank)
Our perception of reality - and of the choices that we have in life - has always been influenced by our surroundings: education, friends, favourite newspaper, Facebook feed etc. On the one hand this allows us to live our values among like-minded people but on the other, it can oversimplify reality and deceive us.
An echo chamber is a group situation where information, ideas and beliefs are amplified or reinforced by transmission and repetition, while different or competing views are censored, disallowed or otherwise under-represented.
This slideshow is summarising pros and cons of Echo Chambers and Filter Bubbles in Media and Social Networks.

Technological Imperialism and Digital WritingLeonardo Flores
Slideshow for my Spectrums of DH Talk for McGill University. Presented on January 15, 2021.
Abstract:
In my talk I will offer an exploration of how the development, distribution, and access to digital technologies have replicated imperialist and colonialist practices of the past and have led to an unequal development of digital writing across the world. I will discuss how the development of electronic literature as a field has happened in privileged academic spaces with institutional resources, research investment, and prestige economies that favor wealthy countries and replicate imperialistic relationships with elit created and researched in the rest of the world. I will conclude by offering some ideas on how we can help decolonize and seek more equitable development of the field.

Technology is bridging our mind with reality in real-time. As a consequence we live in a world of complete interactivity and instant distribution, based on billions of jelly beans wired together to form a new association of consciousness........
Some have likened libraries as museums for information handling in the industrial age.
If only they knew what you were really up to, right? If technology is shaping learning and literacy, then the evolution of social media, video games, and an app-for-everything is a sure sign libraries better get on board the information freight train, onsite and online. Re-thinking the way we partner and deliver library programs is the first step. This presentation highlights the strong correlation between library services in the web world and the real world, and how ‘merging’ them onsite and ‘mirroring’ them online can stimulate new networks and new audiences for libraries.
With the growing popularity of location-based games and augmented reality applications, an opportunity has arisen for tourism destinations to work with game designers and developers to shape tourist experiences. Game-based mobile applications can engage tourists in exploring and learning about the places they visit, and can even be used to shift tourist behavior in ways that benefit the destination. In fact, the academic fields of game design and hospitality/tourism share a great many similarities in their focus on user experience, motivation, and engagement. There is much for game designers to learn from tourism and hospitality experts, as well as great potential for game designers to provide insight into the challenges faced by researchers and practitioners in tourism and hospitality.
In this talk, I will discuss the intersections and complementary components of these two fields, describe a variety of creative examples of tourist-focused games, and discuss the potential for partnerships that benefit both academics and practitioners in each field.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).
