I4MS 2015: Enhancing digital transformation in manufacturing SMEs I4MS 2015 will explore the progress achieved by the I4MS initiative and the impact participation has had on SMEs. To date I4MS has achieved over 80% industrial participation. An initial participation of 80 SMEs has now grown to 150 as momentum continues to build. Success is also evident with SME participation in projects leading to the adaption of new technologies and approaches. I4MS phase two will take this success further through additional projects supported by a budget of approximately EUR 35 Mn. At I4MS 2015 participating SMEs will present their experiences, results achieved and impact made. They will explain how they have benefited and what the adaption of innovative ICT has meant for their business. European support does not just exist at EU level. Action at regional level supported through programmes such as Smart Specialisation present the good opportunity to reach out to and involve the diverse landscape of European SMEs. At I4MS 2015 participants will be introduced to a new activity designed for such outreach – digital innovation competence centres – and an outlook towards the next stage of I4MS. I4MS is a EUR 77 Mn initiative of the 'Factories of the Future' partnership designed to support the adaption of innovative ICT by SMEs. Through seven integrated projects in four key areas, I4MS brings manufacturing SMEs directly into research and innovation projects, introducing them to innovative technologies and supporting the adoption of such technologies.

Presented the 28th October 2015 at the 6th International Conference and Exhibition on body Scanning Technologies 2015, Hometrica Consulting, Lugano, Switzerland. The access to the 3D representation of people’s body shape has multiple applications to consumer goods which performance is related to human body dimensions or shape. This is the case of wearables such as clothing, footwear, headgear, orthotics, or equipment/environments such as furniture, transports or workstations. Some of the existing and potential applications of 3D human representations include personalisation, virtual try-on or size allocation for wearables or product configuration/adjustment for equipment/environments. However, the cost of 3D scanners is high; the devices are too bulky for homes and retail stores; and its proper use requires expertise to get the relevant parameters from the 3D object (e.g. measurements). These three barriers are currently hindering the massive spreading of 3D scanners as consumer good or as typical in-store appliance. This paper describes an array of approaches for realistically estimating human 3D shapes (i.e. full bodies or feet) using a regular smartphone or just entering a set of parameters (e.g. age, gender and self-taken measurements). The proposed approaches are based on data-driven 3D reconstructions, using parameterised shape spaces created from large 3D human body or feet databases. The algorithm finds the combination of shape parameters that best matches either the silhouettes extracted from the images or the body measurements entered. Despite not being actual body scanners, these solutions are easy-to-use and can provide enough accuracy for applications such as virtual try-on, made-to-measure or size allocation of certain types of wearables. Moreover, they can be distributed to the final consumer or to the points of sale at a really reduced cost (or even for free), thus overcoming the main barriers to the massive spreading of its use in e-commerce, new retail experiences, new production pipelines or new business models. In order to illustrate these technologies, some examples of application to different contexts (i.e. virtual worlds, e-commerce and personalisation) are presented: virtual try-on of female fashion (VisuaLook), size allocation for childrenswear (KIDSIZE), personalised comfort insoles (Sunfeet) and personalised shoes (Feetz).

Abstract: In recent years, the World Wide Web has changed from text-focused web pages to multi-media sources featuring photos, videos, and audio. The worldwide growth of broadband connections has facilitated this trend and supports the spread of user-generated content. Navigating and finding interesting content has become a difficult challenge. In this paper, we present approaches which use visual features to predict how interesting a news article will be. This task is part of the NewsREEL Multimedia challenge. The challenge provides a large-scale data set of news items, images, and interactions. We implement a recommender system which can distinguish interesting articles from irrelevant ones based on image features. We evaluate the system’s throughput and predictions. Valentin Heun (PTC): One Reality - A 3rd generation AR User Interface Many of our technological innovations seem to expand the computational abilities without the human in the loop. Augmented Reality is one of the view technologies that promises technological advances that enable us humans a better connection with the ubiquitous technology around us. We are not there yet to make use of such a user interface. We currently have individual islands of interactivity via AR. This conference may have many spatial demos as well, however, a single ubiquitous layer that penetrates all screens, surfaces, machines, and environments are not available. This is what the PTC Reality Lab researches. The core of this research is the ability to use AR in a scalable distributed platform to bridge among technological domains to allow the weaving of multiple technologies into one user experience. The resulting user experience is called One Reality. The goal for One Reality is to provide one seamless, ubiquitous flow of user experience for all technologies that touch the user’s decision making. This talk will iterate on the different stages of Augmented Reality User Interfaces and identifies One Reality as the 3rd stage in the evolution of AR user interfaces.
