Prohibition refers to the law that banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol in the United States from 1919 to 1933. It was enacted through the 18th Amendment and enforced by the Volstead Act. However, Prohibition had the unintended consequence of spurring the rise of illegal speakeasies and bootlegging gangs who made fortunes supplying alcohol, undermining respect for the law and leading to the eventual repeal of the 18th Amendment in 1933.
