TemperanceWas a organized  American movement that started around the early 1800’s. to stop the manufacture and consumption of alcohol. This was a movement of women which believed drinking was responsible for poverty , issues with ill health, and crime.In 1874 a group of women  established the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). They influenced the issue of prohibition into the election process.

     The 18th amendment The 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibited the manufacture, sale, transport, import, or export of alcoholic beverages. However the  amendment did not  address the consumption ofalcohol.
