College students engage in binge drinking, defined as 5 drinks in a row for men, which results in 1,700 annual alcohol-related deaths from preventable injuries. Heavy drinking leads 70% of college students to engage in sexual activity primarily due to alcohol's influence and reduces the likelihood of safer sex practices, increasing the risk of STIs and unplanned pregnancy. Absorption of alcohol is influenced by its concentration, amount consumed, food intake, and mood, as well as stomach physiology, and 13% of emergency room visits by undergraduates are due to alcohol-related injuries, with those having a BAC over 0.08 being over 3 times more likely to experience a violent versus accidental injury.
