This document provides information and recommendations from an AmeriCorps VISTA team on how to increase collaboration among VISTA members. The team identified a need for VISTAs to have better connections and networking opportunities due to their decentralized roles. Their project created an online collaboration toolkit with guides for VISTA leaders and members, instructions for using the VISTA Campus platform, and recommendations for national service coordinators. The toolkit aims to strengthen the VISTA program through improved member satisfaction, retention and sense of community. The team members reflected positively on their experience collaborating online to develop these resources.
Chapter Chat: How A CRP Helped Turn Around A 15-Year Membership DeclineBillhighway
With more than 1,500 clubs and 185,000 members, a membership drop of 2% year over year for 15 consecutive years can really impact your bottom line, leaving you with a crisis on your hands. Rick Rangel, Director of Growth at the Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) had chapters that were drowning. NCGA was at a crossroads. They’d been doing the same thing over and over again with their clubs and expecting different results. Rick realized they weren’t giving their chapter leaders the tools they needed to be successful.
- Club officers found one-off tools on their own, and their data did not automatically flow up to HQ.
- Onboarding processes and value propositions differed from club to club.
- Chapter websites were a huge pain and branding issues were rampant.
- On average, club officers easily put in 40 hours every quarter, volunteering their time and energy, so burnout happened often.
Sound familiar? From off-brand chapter websites to AWOL officers, Rick shares his chapters-in-crisis experience. Tune in to find out what tools, tips, and tricks he used to prevent major mayhem. Under Rick’s helm, NCGA has been able to correct course, now seeing 6% membership growth year over year since 2016. Regardless of your components' structure, you’ll benefit from the CRP advice we share in this webinar.

Join us as we walk through a case study with membership consultant, Scott Oser. Scott worked with the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA) to develop a collaborative membership campaign that aimed at growing a specific membership type at both the affiliate and National level. We’ll cover challenges that arose through the process, how responsibilities were distributed and how the campaign was implemented as a joint effort that overcame the barriers that can often divide affiliates and Nationals.
3 Ways to Tap Chapter Relevance in 2021Billhighway
We’re at the beginning of a new year, and opportunity abounds us. We know chapters are more relevant than ever. In many ways, the success in 2020 for components was tied to the fact that they were in a position to pivot more readily. We can harness that agility with the right support and permissions, so how do we tap chapters? Learn three lenses to view chapter relevance through and how to make a case to optimize chapters as part of your overall association success strategy in 2021.

How to effectively recruit volunteers is an important question. Online volunteer registration sites are one recruitment tool. There are several benefits in terms of promotion as online volunteer registration sites are being promoted through a variety of national organizations. A second major benefit afforded by some volunteer registration software is the ability to store and manage volunteer data. This presentation will provide a quick overview of several sites and the services they provide. We’ll also demonstrate how to register your agency and start posting opportunities to those that are free.

Driving Member Engagement by Showing #VolunteerLoveBillhighway
Mark your calendars: National Volunteer Week is April 19-25th! It’s the perfect opportunity to start thinking about ways to show your chapter volunteers the appreciation they deserve all year-round. Volunteering is one of the stickiest forms of member engagement, and happy volunteers can keep your association chapters on track for years to come. Given that 20-25% of staff labor in associations come from volunteer members, it’s a worthwhile effort to utilize recognition in creating a supportive environment. Let’s draw from research and our own community for a dynamic discussion on ways to spotlight association volunteers and celebrate volunteering in all aspects!
Two years ago the Tuck School of Business rolled out Chatter to its MBA students and staff. Now it is the preferred method of communication for all student clubs, all career services communications, and increasingly for academic use. Rebecca Joffrey has been actively involved in this roll-out, from the initial launch, through early hiccups, to what is now a stable and successful platform that takes on much of Tuck’s internal communications and collaboration. This session is a chance to learn from Tuck’s experience, including what to do (and what not to do) in terms of roll-out and student uptake.

Chapter Performance Reimagined: Taking Your Association's Growth to the Next ...Billhighway
Throughout COVID-19, we’ve seen a lot of associations wrestling with the impact of lower revenue and declining membership. But what if your components could help turn that around for you? In times like these, where many associations are not able to have large in-person conferences, chapters and affiliates can be used to deliver member-value locally in ways that National cannot. By empowering your components, associations can increase member engagement and retention, growing both revenue and membership. In this webinar, we touch on ways you can significantly mobilize your components to better serve members and create a win/win for your members, your chapters, and your association.
We traditionally focus on resources, tools, and insights that help you and your chapters without being a commercial for Billhighway. This webinar is different, so we want to be upfront about it. In times like these, associations need Billhighway more than ever. So we’re breaking with tradition and focusing this webinar on demonstrating how the Billhighway solution can help component-based associations solve the unique challenges of our current times. We wanted to share this detail with you ahead of time and encourage you to invite your executive director, CEO, CFO, and other senior-level leaders to hear a message they won’t want to miss.

At VolunteerMatch we have a unique view into what volunteers are looking for in an opportunity. The age of one-size fits all volunteer engagement is coming to an end. This webinar will start with a review of some of the things that we know about what volunteers are looking for in an opportunity. It will then help you use this information to start designing volunteer opportunities and determining who is the “right” volunteer for your program. You’ll also learn how “word of mouth” plays such a large role in attracting volunteers to your organization and how social media makes this even more important.

12. WHAT IS THE NEED?
CHALLENGE
VISTAs across the country
and locally currently have
an underutilized space
(VISTA Campus, social
media) to connect or
communicate with other
VISTAs thus isolating some
members.
13. WHAT IS THE NEED?
SCOPE
The challenge is
nationwide and affects
every AmeriCorps VISTA
member, leader, and
project.
14. WHAT IS THE NEED?
CAUSES
The VISTA program, by
design, is decentralized
and independent. This
can lead to isolation and
make it more difficult to
build a community.
15. WHAT IS THE NEED?
CONSEQUENCES
A weak or nonexistent
community causes VISTAs
to miss out on chances to
collaborate and improve
their program and
personal professional
development.
16. WHY IS COLLABORATION
IMPORTANT AMONG VISTAS?
Builds lasting
connections and
relationships
Enhances the
efficiency of the
VISTA program
Gives additional
support to
individual VISTAs.
Holds value both
personally and
professionally for
the VISTAs
Strengthens
VISTA projects
Creates
meaningful
relationships
Provides a strong
support system
for VISTA
members
Helps relocated
VISTAs form a
sense of
community
Increases a
sense of
connection with
national service
Increases
networking
opportunities
17. VISION
The vision of the AmeriCorps VISTA ALC team is increased deliberate
collaboration among VISTAs locally, regionally and nationally; leading to
better VISTA retention, greater satisfaction among members and
programs, a greater sense of community, increased peer support
structure and greater branding of the VISTA identity.
18. MISSION
The purpose of the project is to provide AmeriCorps VISTA members with
an improved sense of community by providing them with an easy-to-use,
sustainable, online tool that increases collaboration, satisfaction, member
retention and improved the VISTA brand identity. This, in turn, will
strengthen the AmeriCorps VISTA program and benefit the people we
serve.
19. GOALS
Goal 1: To provide a mechanism/tool for VISTA members that will allow
them to easily use the VISTA Campus (or other platforms like social media)
to search and connect with VISTAs for the purpose of promoting
collaboration and meaningful relationships.
Goal 2: To develop a strategy to promote and utilize this collaborative
mechanism before, during, and after PSO.

Being a part of this Action Learning Challenge Team has been a
great experience, both personally and professionally. I believe I
have been privileged to work so closely over the past few months
with this team of exceptional leaders, who worked seamlessly with
each other to create this product that we are all proud of. I have
been able to apply many of what I have learned to both my work

Working on this ALC team has been an eye opening experience.
After hearing horror stories about working at a distance and
having my own bad experiences with online courses I was
skeptical. However, I don't think I've ever worked with a better
more capable team than I have these last few months. Everyone
came together when needed and contributed their skills and
perspective. I've learned so much about working as a team and
practical tips on using online tools for working on project.
