Ultrasonic testing of forestry products using air-coupled ultrasound faces challenges due to high reflection losses that must be overcome through methods like high ultrasonic pressure transducers, impedance matching layers, and sensitive pre-amplifiers. Blow detectors have been developed for inspection of wood laminates and composites with features like cluster analysis software for defect marking, automated calibration, and integration with peripherals for tasks like thickness gauging and ink marking. Research continues to optimize transducers and inspection parameters for new applications in wood products.
