2. Introduction: An environmental hazard is a substance, a state or an event which has the potential to threaten the surrounding natural environment/ adversely affect people’s health, including pollution and natural disasters such as storms and earthquakes.
Any undesirable change in the physical, chemical or biological features of air, land and water is called pollution.
Any physical, chemical or biotic component/ agent or non- living substance that is responsible to bring about an undesirable change in the environment is called pollutant.
3. Air pollution: Any atmospheric condition in which substances are present at concentrations high enough above their normal ambient levels to produce a measurable effect on man, animals, vegetation or materials is called air pollution.
Harmful effects of air pollution:
1. ON HUMAN:
Around 30-40% of cases of asthma and 20-30% of all respiratory disease.
4. effect our health in many ways with both short term and long term effect.
Short term effect are: irritation to nose, eye, throat, bronchitis, headache etc.
Long term affect are: lung disease, chronic respiratory problem, damage to heart, brain, eyes etc.
Eye irritation due to NOx, O3, PAN, particulates.
Nose and throat due to SO2, NOx etc.
Gaseous pollutants like H2S, SO2, NO2 and hydrocarbons cause odor nuisance.
5. Irritation of respiration tract caused by SOx, NOx, CO, O3.
Increase in mortality.
High conc. of SO2, NO2 and SPM causes bronchitis and asthma.
CO and NO react with hemoglobin and reduce O2 carrying capacity of blood.
Heavy metals like lead can cause poisoning. High conc. cause damage to liver and kidney.
6. FACTORS AFFECTING HUMAN HEALTH:

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2. INTRODUCTION
“Air Pollution is the release of pollutants such as
gases, particles, biological molecules, etc. into
the air that is harmful to human health and the
environment.”
3. It is the contamination of air by harmful gases, dust and
smoke which affects the plants, animals, and humans
drastically.
“Air pollutants are natural and artificial airborne substances that
are introduced into the environment in a concentration sufficient
to have a measurable effect on humans, animals, vegetation, or
building materials.”
There are 2 types of Air pollutants:
1. Primary pollutants that directly cause air pollution.
2. Secondary Pollutants that are formed by the imtermingling of
primary pollutants.
7. 3) Ammonia found in pesticides and fertilzers are
emmitted during agricultural activities.
8. 4) Factories and industries are the main source of carbon
monoxide, organic compounds, hydrocarbons, and
chemicals. And these gases when released into the
atmosphere degrade its quality.
12. AIR POLLUTION COMMONLY RESULTS IN 5
PHENOMENONS:
1) ACID RAIN 2) SMOG
3) GLOBAL WARMING
4) OZONE LAYER DEPLETION
13. • Acid rain is a rain or any other form of precipitation that is
unusually acidic.
• The burning of fossil fuels releases harmful gases such as
nitrogen oxides and sulphur oxides in the air. The water
droplets combine with these pollutants, become acidic, and
fall as acid rain which damages human, animal and plant life.
14. • The presence of high levels of
pollutants in the air cause
visibility to be lowered especially
in cold weather when water also
condenses out of air. This
phenomenon is known as Smog.
( Smoke + Fog)
• Smog causes incidences of
allergies, cancer and heart
diseases.
15. • The greenhouse effect is a
natural process that warms the
Earth's surface.
• The presence of more carbon
dioxide and other gases in the
atmosphere traps more heat
from the sun. This warms up the
atmosphere and surface of the
Earth more, causing Global
Warming.
16. • Due to the emission of greenhouse
gases, there is an imbalance in the
gaseous composition of the air. This
has led to an increase in the
temperature of the earth. This
increase in earth’s temperature is
known as global warming.
• This has resulted in the melting of
glaciers and an increase in sea levels.
Many areas are submerged
underwater.
17. • When chlorine and bromine atoms
come into contact with ozone in the
stratosphere, they destroy ozone
molecules.
• Ozone layer depletion causes increased
UV radiation levels at the Earth's surface,
which is damaging to human health.
• Ozone depletion occurs when
chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and
halons—gases formerly found in aerosol
spray cans and refrigerants—are
released into the atmosphere
18. • Air pollution has
resulted in several
respiratory disorders
and heart diseases
among humans.
• The cases of lung
cancer have increased
in the last few decades.
• Children living near
polluted areas are
more prone to
pneumonia and
• The air pollutants
suspend on the water
bodies and affect the
aquatic life.
• Pollution also compels
the animals to leave
their habitat and shift to
a new place.
• This renders them stray
and has also led to the
extinction of a large
number of animal
species.
• Air pollutants can alter
the physiological
processes of plants,
thereby affecting
patterns of growth.
• Air pollutants cause
damage to leaf cuticles
and affect stomatal
conductance.
• Acid rain affects plants
adversely.
19.
20. 1. Avoid Using Vehicles
People should avoid using vehicles for shorter distances. Rather, they
should prefer public modes of transport to travel from one place to
another.
2. Energy Conservation
A large number of fossil fuels are burnt to generate electricity. Therefore,
do not forget to switch off the electrical appliances when not in use. Use of
energy-efficient devices such CFLs also controls pollution to a greater level.
3. Use of Clean Energy Resources
The use of solar, wind and geothermal energies reduce air pollution at a
larger level.
21. • By minimizing and reducing the use of fire and fire products.
• If the reactions of a certain raw material yield a pollutant, then the
raw materials can be substituted with other less polluting materials.
• Petrol and diesel can be replaced by CNG – Compressed Natural Gas
for fueling vehicles.
• Test all vehicles for vehicle emissions.
• Plants and trees reduce a large number of pollutants in the air.
Ideally, planting trees in areas of high pollution levels will be
extremely effective.
