2. Housing Block
Individual Project
Professor Andrew Schachman
Fall 2013
Why is everyone eating alone? The celibataire is on the
rise in today’s society, despite the fact that humans
are incredibly social animals who crave interac-
tion with others. Those who do live alone must seek
opportunities elsewhere to satiate these cravings.
Why doesn’t our lonely celibataire simply eat his
microwavable pasta with his neighbors down the hall?
Better yet, why don’t they cook a meal together? In a
housing block consisting of over two hundred units,
this seems like a very real possibility. The reason it
doesn’t already happen is because our current ideas
about housing, ownership, security, and individuality
are keeping us from the kinds of opportunities social
housing could provide.
This semester I focused on a proposal that answers
this question while paying special attention to the
process of design. New methods were learned and
practiced for generating ideas and evaluating the
results in a productive way in order to create a com-
prehensive building proposal.
A housing development of this size presents the chal-
lenge of working at several different scales at one
time. Each room of each unit had to be designed while
keeping in mind the buildings these units made up,
the block the buildings resided in, and the city sur-
rounding the block.
Heavy research,iterations,and refinement were struc-
tured as a way to control the design process.

6. Logan Park: Master Plan
Design Partner: Phil Wira
Professors Catherine Wetzel and Paul Endres
Spring 2014
The Logan Park proposal transforms a portion of the
current boulevard system into one mile of linear parks
consisting of elements suitable to neighboring blocks
while still accommodating non-programmed leisure
space. The field house at the corner of Logan Boule-
vard and Milwaukee avenue supports these parks.
Logan Square is centered around a multi-purpose
space to be used for the weekly farmers market and
community meetings as well as special events such
as concerts and festivals.
Kedzie is redirected to the west of the square, becom-
ing a major through street and calming traffic on the
remaining three sides. This allows the square and
the boulevard parks to operate as one for recreation
and leisure.

Fall 2014
The weft is the horizontal threads interlaced through
the warp in woven fabric. Without the weft, the fabric
would fall apart. Because IIT Perspectives is so iso-
lated from the Bronzeville community, and there is
an abundance of open space, our proposal is a weft
to tie the community together to form a strong fabric
rich in culture year round.

14. Bath House
Individual Project
Professor Martin Klaeschen
Spring 2013
The bath house used interior program and reinforced
concrete as a focus of study. I focused on design
process and interior lighting conditions. Natural
light manipulation drove the project and corresponds
directly with programatic elements of the building.
Project development relied on study models in which
lighting was studied in a tangible way, and through
sketches in which spatial organization was explored
to create these lighting conditions.
