This document outlines a procedure to perform an assay of ibuprofen tablets. Ibuprofen is a weakly acidic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that can be estimated through alkalimetry. The procedure involves titrating an alcoholic solution of powdered ibuprofen tablets against a standard sodium hydroxide solution using a phenolphthalein indicator. The amount of sodium hydroxide required is used to calculate the purity percentage of ibuprofen in the sample based on the molecular weight of ibuprofen and weight of sample used.

Principal:
• Ibuprofen is a aryl acetic acid derivative non-
steroidal anti-inflammatory drug which is weakly
acidic in nature. It is estimated by alkalimetry.
The alcoholic solution of ibuprofen is titrated
against a standard solution of sodium hydroxide

Carry out a blank titration.
Titrate with 0.1M NaOH using 0.2ml of Phenolphthalein indicator.
Weigh accurate quantity of powder equivalent to about 0.4 gram of ibuprofen and dissolve in 100 ml
of ethanol
Procedure extraction of ibuprofen: Weigh and powder 20 tablets

=87.67%
= 0.3507/0.4 × 100
% Purity= Calculated value of Ibuprofen/ Wt. of Ibuprofen× 100
Therefor 17 × 0.02063 = 0.3507
Total vol of 0.1 M NaOH = 29.33-12.33= 17ml
Total volume of 0.1 M NaOH required= Avg of Blank- Avg of Back
Means 1 ml of 0.1M NaOH = 0.02063 g of Ibuprofen.
Each mL of 0.1 Molar Sodium hydroxide is required for 0.02063 g of Ibuprofen.
