Part 1: Flammability Codes and Tests
Complete the following questions.
1. First research the commercial building code in your state or local jurisdiction. What version of
the International Building Code (IBC) is in force?
In Georgia, the 2012 version of the International Building Code is in force with state amendments
from 2014 and 2015 (Georgia Construction Codes).
2. Determine the flammability test for draperies and hanging textiles per the IBC in your area,
usually found in Section 8 of the Code. What is the unique value of this test method to fire researchers?
Hanging Textiles and Draperies must be non-combustible or meet the “flame propagation performance
criteria of NFPA 701”(ICC IBC (2012), 197). The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) is a
scope of two tests that apply to different interior fabrics that are used as hanging draperies in com-
mercial settings. Test 1 is used on most single and multi-layered fabrics that are sewn together. Test 2
is used for vinyl coated fabrics (NFPA 701). Each test is a series of three that burns a small sample of
fabric and dertmines Pass/Fail from the Flame, Char Length and Flaming Residue (Flame Retardancy).
These tests are valuable to fire researchers because by testing small samples of fabrics in controlled
environments, researchers can get an idea of how flame will behave when exposed to certain fabrics. By
regulating these fabrics and knowing how they behave, researchers can help create safer environments
and give the public the best chance of survival.
3. Determine the flammability test for upholstery fabrics as recommended per the Association for
Contract Textiles. What is the unique value of this test method to fire researchers?
In a small recreation of a chair seat and back the fabric is exposed to a lighted cigarette. This test is in-
tended to “test the performance of upholstered furniture under conditions of exposure to a smoldering
cigarette” (California).
This test can help researchers determine how a fabric will most likely behave in a home environment
where this type of flame exposure is common. By studying this exposure regulations can be drafted to
ensure safer fabrics, safer upholstery materials to prevent fire growth or slow it down to allow for safe
exits or extinguishing.
Part 2: Commercial Textile Application
1. Identify one window treatment textile
2. Identify at least two textiles to be used as upholstery

Justification of Carpeting Choices for Coastal California Hotel
The attached carpeting choices for the Coastal California Hotel have been carefully selected for their
stain resistant, durability and colorfastness.
The first choice is a Durkan carpet tile featuring an in-laid border design. The main carpet color is tan
with a 24’’ floating perimeter border in sage green. The sage green border mirrors the pool water as well
as the upholstery and drapes. The carpet tiles feature a loop pile which is soft underfoot and has
excellent wear. The tiles feature a limited lifetime tile warranty and stain resistance, as well as an indoor
air quality green certification. Each tile can be removed for easy cleaning and replacement.
The second choice is a Durkan broadloom in a sand color with stria in lighter and darker shades. The
stria will be installed to run vertically from the changing area to the pool. The stria mimics the ripples of
water or the sand on a beach. The soft, tan color will blend well with the selected upholstery and drapes
to create a spa-like atmosphere. The soft loop pile is rated heavy and features a limited lifetime
warranty on wear and colorfastness as well as a 10 year stain resistant warranty. The busy pattern will
disguise dirt between cleanings and will keep guest energized and moving towards the pool and bar
area.

Justification for Carpeting Choices for Young Married Couple
The carpeting choices curated for the Young family include a soft variegated broadloom in a soft grey
and a moroccan inspired luxurious carpet tile in cream and dark grey.
The first choice is the Shaw broadloom in Silver Sage. This supple carpet is variegated to hide pet hair
and dirt. The style type is called texture which creates a semi-formal look with smooth twisted yarns.
This carpet is treated for stain resistance. It will be installed with an upgraded padding for increased
softness, durability and to reduce the signs of wear.
The second choice is an upgraded carpet tile from Flor. The design features small inter-connected
diamonds with star-bursts in dark grey on a cream background. The busy design will disguise pet hair
and dirt but is subtle and won’t compete with the upholstery and drapes. The carpet tiles feature a loop
pile for a neat appearance and are made with 63% recycled materials. Flor tiles are not stain resistant
but individual tiles can be removed for easy cleaning or replacement.

Part 1: FlammabilityCodes and Tests Complete the following questions. 1. First research the commercial building code in your state or local jurisdiction. What version of the International Building Code (IBC) is in force? In Georgia, the 2012 version of the International Building Code is in force with state amendments from 2014 and 2015 (Georgia Construction Codes). 2. Hanging Textiles and Draperies must be non-combustible or meet the “flame propagation performance criteria of NFPA 701”(ICC IBC (2012), 197). The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) is a scope of two tests that apply to different interior fabrics that are used as hanging draperies in com- mercial settings. Justification for CarpetingChoices for Young Married Couple The carpeting choices curated for the Young family include a soft variegated broadloom in a soft grey and a moroccan inspired luxurious carpet tile in cream and dark grey. The first choice is the Shaw broadloom in Silver Sage. This supple carpet is variegated to hide pet hair and dirt. The style type is called texture which creates a semi-formal look with smooth twisted yarns. This carpet is treated for stain resistance. It will be installed with an upgraded padding for increased softness, durability and to reduce the signs of wear. The second choice is an upgraded carpet tile from Flor. The design features small inter-connected diamonds with star-bursts in dark grey on a cream background. The busy design will disguise pet hair and dirt but is subtle and won’t compete with the upholstery and drapes. The carpet tiles feature a loop pile for a neat appearance and are made with 63% recycled materials. Flor tiles are not stain resistant but individual tiles can be removed for easy cleaning or replacement.
