2011-2012 Architecture for Humanity Annual Report Cameron Sinclair
Detailed review of the work of Architecture for Humanity during the 2011-2012 fiscal year. Projects include school building in Peru and Mexico, youth sports facilities in Rwanda, South Africa and US as well as rebuilding in Haiti and Japan
Workshop | Planet Centric Impact Mapping
As designers, we are part of creating or redesigning products and services for real people, that will experience them. Even if we don´t think about it, each decision we make will affect someone, and too often we have a narrow perspective on who that someone is. In this workshop, you will learn more about the unintended consequences of design, and who it is important to reflect on the unintended consequences of design for people, society and the planet. So, how do we become more aware of the potential and the power within each decision?
Using a real project case, and split into groups, Idun Aune and Emily Lin will introduce some concrete tools on how to investigate the impact, positive or negative, of your concept. They will then teach you how to build impact strategies to address these impacts; either to reduce negative ones or enhance positive ones.
By the end of the workshop, you will be more aware of, and equipped to take responsibility for what you create, and control how you use design.
Jacob Sayles and Susan Evans of Office Nomads put together this presentation for a Great City Brown Bag on 7/8/2010. This presentation references their coworking space in Capitol Hill: Office Nomads.

Economic and racial segregation has strangled opportunities for millions of people. Disinvestment has devastated entire city neighborhoods and suburban villages, towns, and cities. Segregation results in a sprawling and expanded urban footprint, increasing the cost of servicing land and mobility and reducing the quality of life of people.
How do we reduce segregation? It is not simple, and the answer may range from a regenesis of a compact and dense downtown to more transit-oriented developments, recycling buildings, mix-use, and diverse neighborhoods, and building people-centered spaces for all.
The St Charles proposal is an attempt to leverage on what the Greeks and Romans knew of the relationship between people and the built environment and reverse the patterns we commonly associate with segregation and inequality. Expansion has worked for developers but has proven catastrophic for communities and society as a whole. As the population continues to migrate to intermediate and smaller cities we need need to measure the right mix of races, genres, ages, uses that makes communities thrive and prosper.
Smart Cities Program - Harvard GSD Executive Education - Sponsored by Dubai R...Ben Havlin
To compete in today’s global landscape or local market (and anywhere in between), technology needs to become part of a community’s DNA and be the foundation for all change. Technology and innovation impact environmental, economic, ad social sustainability in our communities and nations. How should leaders and stakeholders get organized around these phenomena to take advantage of the opportunities and stay competitive in today’s global economy? After this program, you will better appreciate the impact Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and the “Internet of Everything” have on the building, regeneration, and sustainment of communities around the world. Using case studies that provide real-life examples and context, this program will help shape your playbook and toolkit to address the planning, design, and realization of 21st century infrastructure and communities.

On the other hand if you’re not a designer, the chances of making some common graphic design mistakes are even higher. Because you don’t know what you don’t know. That’s where this blog comes in. To make your job easier and help you create better designs, we have put together a list of common graphic design mistakes that you need to avoid.

Our five-point plan for long-term reconstruction:
1. Enable our local chapters to provide technical assistance and support to
existing recovery agencies.
2. Provide design and construction assistance to nonprofits and community-
based organizations in affected communities to repair civic structures and
public spaces.
3. Provide technical assistance to property owners, with a focus on small
businesses and rental properties in low-income communities.
4. Provide community design, planning and architectural support to local
agencies to rebuild and to develop model mitigation strategies, especially
along the New Jersey shore.
5. Build resilient and green. Provide assistance to replace outdated building
systems with more sustainable energy-efficient solutions.

ACTIVE SPACES
Architecture for Humanity is seeking to partner with cities to
transform under-utilized spaces into active places within the
US.
We are focusing on five areas that support physical activity;
1. Open Spaces / Parks
2. Urban Design / Land Use
3. Transportation
4. Schools
5. Buildings / Workplaces
Working with over 70 partners under the Designed To Move
collective we hope to bring momentum to a nationwide
movement to create healthier, active spaces in our cities and
towns. As the lead organization in the built environment,
Architecture for Humanity is seeking to identify three to five
cities to pilot programs to build innovative spaces that tackle
obesity and empower healthier citizens.

Bradner Gardens Park Improvements,
Seattle, 1999–2000
Bradner Gardens Park holds particular
significance in the history of community
action in Seattle. Long neglected by the
city and its parks department, the park
was rescued in the early 1990s by a
dedicated group of local residents, who
reconfigured it as a public community
garden. In the late 1990s, as real estate
values improved, the city attempted to
replace the park with a market-rate
housing development, and the ensuing
controversy galvanized the local com-
munity to establish the park as open
space in perpetuity.
The Design/Build Studio participated
in this process by offering its labor
as an in-kind contribution to enable
the community to obtain a matching
grant from the city’s Department of
Neighborhoods for park improvements.
Among the projects completed over
two years were a wood and concrete
footbridge, three decorative steel
perimeter gates, and a pavilion canopy
for the central meeting area.
