Artificial intelligence enters the medical fieldRuchi Jain
In the medical and health field, artificial intelligence can help reduce the cost of ongoing health operations, and can have an impact on the quality of medical care for patients everywhere. By diagnosing diseases earlier, AI can also improve patient outcomes. No matter how you look at it, artificial intelligence has great potential in healthcare.
When it comes to AI use for prediction, diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions, reality is often replaced with a hype. Limitations should be known. A review of AI failures and challenges in healthcare showing why it is not likely for algorithms to replace physicians in the nearest future.

The latest AI advances have the potential to massively improve our health and well-being. However, most of the work is yet to be done. In this talk, we will explore the most important opportunities for AI in healthcare. For example, we will explore how AI can diagnose major life-threatening conditions even before those conditions emerge. We will talk about AI ability to recommend dramatically more effective and less harmful treatment plans based on AI understanding of patient's medical history and current conditions. Finally, we will talk about AI role in making our healthcare system effective and affordable for everyone. For each area, we will discuss the latest progress made as well as the challenges remaining.

A Roadmap for Optimizing Clinical Decision SupportHealth Catalyst
Compared to industries such as aerospace and automotive, healthcare lags behind in decision support innovation. Following the aerospace and automotive arenas, healthcare can learn critical lessons about improving its clinical decision support capabilities to help clinicians make more efficient, data-informed decisions:
Achieve widespread digitization: Healthcare must digitize its assets and operations (patient registration, scheduling, encounters, diagnosis, orders, billings, and claims) for effective CDS similarly to how aerospace digitized the aircraft, air traffic control, baggage handling, ticketing, maintenance, and manufacturing.
Build data volume and scope: Healthcare must collect socioeconomic, genomic, patient-reported outcomes, claims data, and more to truly understand the patient at the center of the human health data ecosystem.
Six Ways Health Systems Use Analytics to Improve Patient SafetyHealth Catalyst
With preventable patient harm associated with over 400,000 deaths in the U.S. annually, improving safety is a top priority for healthcare organizations. To reduce risks for hospitalized patients, health systems are using patient safety analytics and trigger-based surveillance tools to better understand and recognize the types of harm occurring at their facilities and intervene as early as possible.
Six examples of analytics-driven patient safety success cover improvement in the following areas:
Wrong-patient order errors.
Blood management.
Clostridioides difficile (C. diff).
Opioid dependence.
Event reporting.
Sepsis.

The Biggest Healthcare Trends of 2019 and What's to Come in 2020Health Catalyst
In our Healthcare Outlook for 2019 webinar, Stephen Grossbart, PhD, and Bobbi Brown, MBA, shared their predictions for the biggest trends of the year. Which predictions panned out and which didn’t? View this webinar as Stephen takes a look back at 2019 and makes his forecast for 2020.
So, what did happen in 2019? Following the 2018 midterm elections, we predicted a divided Congress would not pass policies to strengthen or weaken the Affordable Care Act (ACA). We were right. Meanwhile, Democratic presidential candidates debated the extent to which they would support Medicare for All. Insurance costs continued to rise, breaking $20,000 annually for families with employer-sponsored coverage, and CMS continued to support payment policies rewarding quality and interoperability as part of their payment policy.
Join Stephen as he looks in the rearview mirror at these important issues and how they impacted the healthcare industry in 2019 and then gazes into the crystal ball to predict the trends that will most impact healthcare in 2020. In this webinar, Stephen discusses the following topics and more:
• The continued focus on price transparency.
• Congress’ efforts to control prescription drug costs.
• Policies that may change the future of ACOs.
• What to expect going into the 2020 election year.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
