Public:
● Public LLMs run in a public cloud
environment
● The are trained using their users’
behavior and data
● Thus, they change constantly,
and are not a good fit for
confidential data
Private:
● Private LLMs can run in a private
cloud, virtual private cloud, on
prem “classic” datacenter, or
even on your laptop
● The LLM doesn’t change unless
you change it - good for change
control
● Your queries and data won’t leave
your private environment

Customization
● Public and private LLMs can be connected to private internal data sets
● E.g., you could connect your Sales Force information to Chat GPT
● But do you really want your customer info to be used to train a public LLM?
● How about Personally Identifiable Information rules, HIPPA, etc?
● What about engineering data? What about NDAs with third parties?

Can you protect YOUR company’s data?

You have to create a business account, then fill out a form
Do this, but it’s still not sufficient for many data privacy requirements
For that, you’d need a more advanced “private LLM” system
This can also save (a lot of) money, and gives you better control
