Production of banana alcohol and utilization of banana residueeSAT Journals
Abstract Aim of the study was production of alcohol from banana juice which use as complete replacement of malt in alcohol production by utilizing pure culture of Sacharomyces cerevisiae as fermenting organism. Banana juice was made from banana pulp by using pectinase enzyme. Optimization of amount of pectinase enzyme for juice production and optimization of pH of the final product were also aim of this study. Pectinase enzyme used for liquefying the pulp production was 0.0003% (w/v). The sugar percentage found in the banana juice was 18%. A sequential study has been done by consecutive pH levels of 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, and 7.0 in the final product. The best product was obtained at pH 6.0 with respect to taste; pH was regulated only after the complete fermentation of the banana juice but just before the filtration process. Alcohol percentage of the product was 8% (v/v) at 28oC. Total number of colonies detected was 21 in freshly prepared alcohol and total number of colonies detected was 20 in the beer after 5 months from production. Another aim of the work was utilization of the banana residue for the production of fiber enriched cookies. High fiber enriched cookies were prepared using 5%-20% level of fiber obtained from banana residue. 7%-10 % fiber content was obtained as best parameter for cookie production and final moisture content of cookie was 3%. On the line of the State Government of Tamil Nadu where the palm is treated as a ‘State Tree’, policy support also needs to be given in other concerned States where plenty of palms are available.

o Tender coconut beverage with suspended kernels
Tender coconut water is the best healthy soft drink that nature provides. This
natural product is collected and preserved as beverage. The low-cost technology
is refined and ready for commercialization, and can be considered by agri-SMEs
and farmer groups. The market potential of the product is large and is currently
dominated by carbonated, soft-drinks, which are not healthy. The product is an
ideal, healthy replacement
o Virgin coconut oil meal (VCM) based products viz : biscuit, compressed
bar, burfi, ladoo, porridge and noodles
VCM is a bi-product of virgin coconut oil and rich in fiber and proteins. The meal
can be a base to develop biscuit, compressed bar, burfi, ladoo, porridge and
noodles. Desiccated coconut is mixed with VCM for the production of coconut
burfi. Dates syrup, sugar fried cashew nuts, milk and wheat flour are the various
components used in the production of various VCO meal products.
o Sweet coconut chips

An innovative product, coconut chips is a low caloric value, rich in fiber and
ready-to-eat snack. It is not deep fried unlike others that use edible and non-
edible oils such as palm-oil which have lower nutritious value. Coconut chips
contain no additives and artificial sweeteners.
o Virgin coconut oil
Traditionally coconut oil is prepared from sun-dried copra. The new technology
was developed to produce oil from coconut milk that gives virgin coconut oil. The
technology has been refined and two methods were developed for production of
the oil, which contains more phenolic content, antioxidant activity than other
commercial grade oils which are having lower nutritional value.
o Bajra lassi; Milk protein enriched iron-fortified biscuits from composite
dairy millet mix; and pearl millet & milk solid based Nutrimix
The three products i.e. Bajra lassi, milk protein-enriched iron fortified buiscuits
from a composite dairy-millet mix and nutrimix based on pearl millet & milk
solids belongs to composite dairy foods category. All these products have been
developed to harness the nutritional virtues of under-utilized pearl millets and
milk solids specially the dairy by-products i.e. whey. Whey is a major dairy by-
product and it exhibit high biological value due to its unique amino acid
composition. Pearl millet is major millet crop grown in rain fed agro-climatic
zones is quite rich in micronutrients, possess unique amino-acid profile and
dietary fiber, but presence of anti-nutrients, polyphenolics and pigmentation
limits their application for food purposes. Increasing micronutrient deficiency and
protein malnutrition can be alleviated through the utilization of whey, milk solids
and pearl millet in food products. Intervention of the micronutrient and protein
deficiencies through concept of composite dairy cereal mix led to the
development of bajra lassi and high protein biscuits from composite dairy cereal
mix.
o Insta Idly Dry Mix
Idly is a popular breakfast dish in peninsular India. Traditional idly preparation
takes at least 14-18 hrs of preparatory work, including wet grinding that is a
cumbersome process. All this is eliminated in this innovative technology that uses
dry grinding process and reduces preparation time to 2 hrs. The fermented batter
is steam cooked by usual method.
o Millet Dhokla
The innovative, millet dhokla mix is allowed to ferment for 1 hour with addition of
lime juice and curd at room temperature. The batter is then poured into a
greased pan and steamed, cooled to the room temperature and cut into pieces,
seasoned with mustard seeds, green chillies and coriander leaves. This
technology improves the nutrient value and reduces fermentation time from 9
hours to just 1 hour.

o Development of process technology for ginger extract standardized to
>20% w/w total gingerols as a water soluble powder
As the name oleo-resin indicates, ginger oleoresin predominantly contains ginger
oils and resins which are both water insoluble. A special process has been
developed whereby standardized ginger extract having > 20% w/w total
gingerols in water soluble form can be produced. The powder has application in
food and pharma sector.
o Development of process technology for ginger extract standardized to >
30% w/w total gingerols as a free flowing powder
Another innovative process for producing standardized ginger extract having >
30% w/w total gingerols in a free flowing powder form, which prevents handling
losses which are generally very high when the ginger oleoresin is in the form of a
sticky thick paste. Ginger extracts having high gingerol content are preferred in
the market as small quantities are sufficient to deliver the required therapeutic
effect in the nutraceuticals / dietary supplement industry.
o Technology for successive water extract of ginger (NR-Ginger) for
cholesterol management
After the extraction of oleoresin from ginger, the spent material is generally
thrown away. An innovative process has now been developed that can be used
for preparation of successive water extract from ginger spent. This extract was
further fractionated to achieve desired bioactivity and water solubility. In lab
animal models, the extract showed comparable cholesterol lowering activity to
statins. This is being positioned as a unique extract of ginger in the international
market and can help in cholesterol management.
o Juli coffee (Instant coffee)
Prosopis juliflora is found in abundance in arid and semi-arid tropic of India.
Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Haryana are states where pods of the
species are available in very high quantity. The species produce pods from
December to May which are highly liked by livestock. The ripened pods of the
plant are thrashed in a specially designed plot thresher and layers is separated
and sieved. By threshing and sieving 20 kg pods, approximately 5kg fine
mesocarp is obtained which is used for processing Juli coffee. This fine mesocarp
powder is roasted at 250o C for half an hour in a pre-heated oven with
intermittent mixing and blended with 20% original roasted coffee powder. After
mixing original roasted coffee powder, 10 % chicory powder is mixed in this
mixture which gives taste, colour and aroma of normal instant coffee. For
obtaining best and highly soluble Juli coffee the mixture obtained above is
dissolved in water @ of 100g mixture in 200 ml water and filtered. In this way 90
g Juli coffee powder is obtained which is freeze dried for 9-10 hours. After
completing this process 70g best quality Juli coffee can be obtained. Analysis of

current market trends of instant coffee brands indicate average cost of Rs. 108
per 100 g. Against this, the estimated cost of Juli coffee is Rs. 45/ 100g.
o Prosopis juliflora pods based cheaper concentrate mixture as economical
cattle feed
The pods of Prosopis juliflora is liked by livestock and can be used to reduce cost
of concentrate ration, while at the same time offers higher nutritive value when
compared to currently available feed in market.
o Banana pseudostem central core candy
Central core of banana pseudostem is rich in digestible fibres, Iron, Vitamins B3
and B5. Hence candy made from central core of banana pseudostem is rich in
these nutrients. After processing of central core into candy it is delicious and
palatable.
o Capsicum salsa
Capsicum salsa is an innovative ketchup/sauce like product from whole capsicum
or with blend of tomato, spices and condiments. The technology is cost effective
and process involves hot breaking, maceration, concentration and stabilization
with permitted preservatives. The product has natural red colour from capsanthin
from red capsicum, has a characteristics flavour and thus high visual appeal. It
provides a suitable alternative to existing „tomato sauce”. The product is high in
functional quality and an excellent source of ascorbic acid, antioxidant phenolics
and flavonoids.
Agri-Engineering & Textiles & Industrial Processing
o Pollution Preventing System (PPS) for controlling the effluents emitted
from the traditional drum roasting process in cashew factories
The system is designed to remove heavy carbon particles as well as the polluting
gases generated during the conventional drum roasting process in cashew
factories leaving only steam outside.
o A new non thermal technology for cutting and peeling of raw cashew-nut
Incubating with certain type of hydroxyl ion producing mixture was found feasible
for cutting the cashew shell as well as peeling the testa. This technology was
standardized for cutting open the raw cashew nut without thermal application.
o Low cost method for processing technology for extraction of anacardic
acid
New extraction process for anacardic acid from cashew shell was developed
without thermal application in salt form and can be stored as anacardate. The
compound anacardic acid has the property to be anti-cancerous, antibacterial etc.

By using cashew shell as a raw material, the process will help in utilization of
cashew industry by product (cashew shell) and thereby making it into a very
good foreign exchange earner compound.
o Browning free custard Apple pulp extracting technology
An innovative technology has now been developed for mechanized extraction of
pulp from custard apple fruit. The machine is in two parts: first part scoops out
the pulp with seed from fruit leaving behind the peel. The second part separates
the seed from pulp which can be stored for up-to one year. Potential users can be
Ice-cream Industry, Dairy and Food processing Industry, Bakery and
Confectionary Industry etc. Cold storage temperature required for this pulp is -20
degree C with -30 degree C in the beginning (Blast freezing).
o Value Chain on Castor and its Industrial Products
Developed products based on 2-octanol such as Dicapryl phthalate, Dicapryl
sebacate, Dicapryl maleate, Dicapryl fumarate, Dicapryl adipate, Dicapryl ether,
Capryl glycidyl ether, 2-octene, etc.
Developed process technology for extraction and isolation of the protein from
deoiled castor cake.
Developed adhesive formulation for industrial applications (wood) using castor
protein.
o Cryo-grinding unit for value addition in seed spices
Cryogenic grinding is a method of powdering herbs and spices at subzero
temperatures ranging from 0 to -195 degree Celsius. The herbs and spices are
frozen with liquid nitrogen as they are being ground. This process does not
damage or alter the chemical composition of ground material in any way. The low
temperature can save volatile components and heat sensitive constituents in
herbs and spices.
o Non-woven fabric preparation from banana pseudostem and extraction
of fiber using raspador
Extraction of fiber using raspador and making non-woven fabric is a unique
innovation which converts banana pesudostem waste into wealth and hence a
boon for banana farmers. The technology has a potential to revolutionize the
banana economy of the country.
o Flexible Rubber Dams (Rubber-Textile composite for watershed
management)
A rubber dam or flexible check dam is an inflatable structure build across a
stream used for water conservation, flood control and regulating flow of water in
the stream. When it is inflated, it serves as a check dam/weir. And when it is

deflated, it functions as a flood mitigation device and sediment flushing. The head
or height of rubber dam is variable and helps regulate the depth of flow in the
diversion channel for irrigation present in the upstream side of the check dam.
o Nano cellulose Production Technology
Production of nanocellulose is an energy intensive process which affects its
scaling up for commercial production. In spite of being many processes available
for energy reduction, they are limited to pilot scale and not yet reached the
commercial production. The technological innovation deals with the reduction in
energy consumption during production of nanocellulose from cellulosic biomass in
an eco-friendly way.
o Technology of dyeing cotton and silk with natural dyes
Until the turn of the century, fabrics were coloured using natural dye stuffs
obtained from nature as they were the only colouring substances available at that
time. Natural dyes are extracted from the roots, stems, leaves, flowers fruits and
seeds of various plants and dried bodies of certain insects and minerals. The
innovative technology has developed dye shades from 8 sources to dye cotton
(7949 shades), silk (2431 shades) and banana fibres (150 shades). The gray
scale readings of colour fastness ranged from 3.5 to 5, which mean good to
excellent fastness to sunlight, crocking, perspiration and washing. These shades
are recommendable for application.
o Eco-Powders
The innovative technology provides more than 6 eco- powders with improved
shades and replicability besides environmental safeguards.
o Eco-Paints
Presently 15 shades of paints are produced with this technology, which can be
spray dried suitable for larger scale production, as well as used on varied
decorative products.
o PCR based quality estimation technology for purity of Pashmina wool
Pashmina, popularly known as 'Cashmere', is well known for its fineness, warmth,
softness, desirable aesthetic value, elegance and timelessness in fashion. In
India, bulk of Pashmina fibre is used for the manufacture of shawls, mainly in
Kashmir valley. The fabric produced from Pashmina is usually handspun and hand
woven product. The processing of Pashmina involves lot of labour in sorting,
spinning, weaving and dyeing which are usually done manually. Being very
expensive, it is generally adulterated with other animal fibre and thus this
technology for identification of animal fibers is a very innovative step towards
limiting adulteration in Pashiman wool.

The technology is PCR based protocol that has been developed to identify origin
of animal fibre especially Pashmina in woollen products. Quality DNA has been
extracted from animal fibres and their blended products. The technique is able to
amplify Pashmina genes and sheep wool to identify the blend up to 10% level. It
is a quality control tool to measure the purity and authentication of prepared
garments made from pure Pashmina. It could be used for quality control
inspectors of the State Departments and quality control wing of the industries.
o Improvisation of traditional charkha
The pashmina fibre undergoes a series of processing steps viz; dehairing,
spinning, weaving, and finishing etc in order to get a finished product. Spinning is
a processing step, usually accomplished by the women folk of both rural and
urban areas on a traditional spinning wheel locally known as Yender. The spinner
operates the charkha in a specific sitting posture. It is an arduous task as it
causes lot of physical stress leading to backache, numbness in the legs and
several other associated problems. Besides that the job is less remunerative to
the spinners. Keeping in view, the popularity of Pashmina shawls, difficult
processing steps and less remuneration, an innovative Table Top Paddle Operated
NAIP charkha was fabricated, so as to improve the efficiency of spinning and
thereby remuneration of spinners besides reducing the physical drudgery and at
the same time keeping the originality (Hand spun Hand woven status) of the
product intact.
Veterinary & Livestock
o Animal feed with potato waste
The technology utilizes the by-products from the potato processing industry that
leaves 40% undersized unusable potato and their peel as by-product by
converting it into animal feed that can be used for feeding about 300 million
cattle and buffalo population which is a major challenge. Potato processing waste
can efficiently be used to replace grains used in costly cattle feed.
o A novel micro-technique & media for selective enumeration and
detection of Enterococci in milk
The technology involves application of specific enzymatic reaction in selective
medium. The marker enzyme which participates in unique biochemical pathways
of specific genera or strain hydrolyze chromogenic substrate complex and release
free chromogen which can be detected visually by color change (Patent Reg. No.
IPR# 119/ DEL/ 2012). Currently, commercially available media like citrate azide
agar requires an incubation period of 72-96 hrs for detection of Enterococci in
milk. The development of this new “Single Stage Micro Technique” is to facilitate
its use in R &D institutions and dairy industry for rapid detection of Enterococci.
The medium is highly selective for Enterococci and allow its detection in single
working day. The technology has the potential to replace the existing medium for
Enterococci for being cost effective (Rs 98.3 per liter) as against Citrate azide

agar (CAA) available @ Rs 262.5 per liter and Bile Esculin azide agar available @
Rs 493.5per liter.
o Two stage enzyme assay for detection of L. monocytogenes in milk
Two-stage bio-assay has been developed for detection of L. monocytogenes
based on the principle of targeting enzyme-substrate reaction for specific marker
enzyme(s) to release free chromogen that can be visually detected by colour
change (Patent application IPR/ FA/ 12037-L/2012). The assay confirms the
presence of L. monocytogenes within real time of 4.30±0.10h after initial pre-
enrichment of food samples in novel selective medium i.e. LSEM for 18/ or 24h as
against 5-7 days protocol following conventional method (ISO: 11290-2:1998).
o Spore inhibition based enzyme substrate assay for monitoring Aflatoxin
M1 in milk
The developed technology works on the principle of spore germination inhibition
if there is Aflatoxin M1 in milk. In case Aflatoxin M1 is absent, the marker
enzymes are released during germination which changes the colour of
chromogenic substrate to sky blue colour. However, in presence of Aflatoxin M1,
the spore germination process is inhibited at ≥ MRL (0.5 ppb) level of Aflatoxin
M1 and no change in colour of substrate indicates the presence of Aflatoxin M1
when pre-treated milk along with chromogen is incubated at 37±2oC for 45 ± 5
min.
o DNAzyme based lead biosensor
Two immobilization strategies have been optimized for DNAzyme based studies.
In first method, DNAzyme has been immobilized in TMOS based hydrosol gel in a
microarray plate and the microarray analysis of lead in hydrosol gel system has
been successfully miniaturized up to 10µl volume, with a detection limit of 0.12
nanomoles. In the second method, immobilization of fluorophore bearing
DNAzyme through SAM on gold solid phase surface has been achieved. In this
case, 6 X 10-3 nanomoles bio-sensing of lead at 5µl volume has been achieved in
synthetic and milk samples.
o Recombinant whole cell cadmium biosensor
This involves development of a recombinant biosensor plasmid pNV12 by
integration of cadC promoter upstream to gfpmut3a of expression vector
pAD123. A recombinant biosensor is developed by transforming pNV12 in E. coli
DH5α. Recombinant biosensor showed specificity towards cadmium, with a
detection limit of 10µg/l and a response time of 15 min. No interference is
observed by Pb & Zn, and the system requires no sample pre-treatment.
o Microarray based heavy metal optical biosensor
Realizing need for quick sampling of milk, multiple sample analysis microarray
based heavy metal optical biosensor has been developed with the Bioassay

principle based on inhibition of urease activity. Microbial whole cells and acridine
orange (used as florescent indicator) are co-immobilized with hydro sol-gel
(Ethanol TEOS) approach in microwell plate. Urea is converted to ammonium and
bicarbonate with urease activity that result in protonation of acridine orange and
consequently decrease in fluorescent count. In presence of Cd in the reaction
mixture (sample) urease activity gets inhibited thereby lesser ammonium
production and consequently increased fluorescent count. In comparison to
control fluorescent count increase with increasing concentration of the analyte
i.e. Cd. Detection limit of 0.001 mg/l of Cd equivalent has been achieved well
below the permissible limit for water as defined by EPA (i.e. 0.005mg/l).
o Novel phytoacaricide for the control of chemical acaricide resistant tick
infestations in animals
All most all dairy and meat animals suffer from tick infestations throughout
tropical countries including India. Continuous and indiscriminate use of synthetic
chemicals, which is the commonly adopted measure to control ticks, has
developed resistance In them. Besides, the milk and meat product is regularly
contaminated due to residual effect of these chemicals. Human health also
suffers due to excessive use of these chemicals. To solve this critical problem,
two novel phyto-acaricides have been developed which are safe, non-toxic to
animals and human, non-contaminating, with less chances of development of
resistance and can tackle the specific problem of controlling chemical resistant
tick populations. The product has been tested at field condition and found
effective. The products have commercial potential both nationally and
internationally. Big companies having infrastructure for large scale production of
the product will definitely be interested for commercialization of the valued
product.
o PCR based DNA test for the differentiation of cattle and buffalo meat and
milk
This innovation is able to differentiate genomic DNA of cattle and buffalo origin
utilizing the size differentiation as well as positive negative amplification of PCR
amplified products from single set of primers simply by agarose gel
electrophoresis. This technology is already optimized and superior in terms of
reliability, since it further confirms the origin of samples to be assured using
second set of primers capable of giving positive or negative test also. The
technology developed is novel, simple, easy to adopt and cost effective as
compared to costlier and cumbersome techniques of PCR-RFLP, sequencing, real-
time PCR and SnapShot utilized by other workers. It can be utilized for
differentiating cattle and buffalo milk and meat samples and will be useful in
detection of advertent mixing of both as well as in vetro-legal cases.
o Parentage verification kits for (i) goat and (ii) other ruminant livestock
species

Parentage analysis of livestock animals is becoming increasingly important in
animal husbandry to improve the accuracy of selection and to select sires to
increase production and reproduction traits. Increased use of Artificial
Insemination and selection of superior males for various economic traits are the
basic established tenets of scientific animal breeding. Recent times have seen
usage of DNA based markers for parentage control especially in horses, canines
and cattle for which the commercial kits are available. No parentage verification
kit was available for other livestock species.
Five kits for parentage verification has now been developed which cover most of
the livestock species. These are parentage verification kits for buffalo, cattle,
camel and goat. A single parentage verification kit for all the ruminant livestock
species which include cattle, sheep, goat, yak, mithun and buffalo has also been
developed. These are the first kits of DNA based markers for
parentage/paternity. A core set of 15 microsatellite markers each from cattle
genome database have been identified which are amplifiable in a single multiplex
PCR reaction in cattle and buffalo and 14 markers in goat. Similarly, markers
were identified for camel which have been pooled together to form a single
multiplex PCR reaction for simultaneous amplification of all the markers. The
markers selected are highly polymorphic, have high heterozygosity, located on
different chromosomes and provide a very high probability of exclusion.
o Mineral Based-Technology for estrus induction and synchronization in
bovines for increasing the milk production
This unique mineral based technology is a simple, cheaper and highly effective.
This targets the follicular and corpus luteum development besides toning the
uterus for conception. The minimum estrous induction rate in random population
of cows is above 85% while in seasonal breeder like buffaloes it is above 72%
encompassing all the ecosystem/agro-climates of the country. No comparative
technology exists anywhere. The nearest technology is area specific mineral
mixture or special supplements which are able to induce estrous only in 25-35%
animals and comparatively costly.
o Production of cooked and smoked pork sausage, Smoked pork,Pork
Pickle with bamboo Shoot and Bhoot Jalakia.
Rapid change in life-style and food habits, rising prosperity have created an
unprecedented demand for value added processed food products. Traditionally,
the people of the North Eastern region of India have a strong preference for
foods of animal origin and meat is in great demand in the region. However, due
to severe shortfall in processed pork products, the region imports huge quantity
of processed meat product from outside. Hence, there is a great scope of
marketing value added pork products like sausage in the NER.
o Low cost multiplication technology of salt tolerant bio-growth enhancers
(Bacillus, Pseudomonads & Trichoderma) for increasing productivity of
agri-horti crops in normal and sodic soils

Continuous use of chemical fertilizers and systemic pesticides changes the micro-
environment around root zone of plants and the changed environment does not
support the growth of beneficial soil microbes. Moreover, the use of chemical
fertilizers is limited to NPK and indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides to
control pest and diseases is widely prevalent. Bacillus is well known soil microbe
for nutrient uptake while Pseudomonas and Trichoderma are well known for their
plant protection properties apart from growth regulation. Even though
considerable amount of isolates are available in the country as biofertilizers and
biocontrol agents, the strains are specific to particular region or soil pH.
Moreover, the cost of commercial product ranges from Rs. 80-150 /kg in the
open market and public sector institutions. Generally farmers use single microbe
and thus, the benefit is also limited. Due to higher cost, limited benefit and area
specificity, small and marginal farmers have reservation over its use and prefer
chemical fertilizer and fungicides. Moreover, there is no formulation that is well
validated for the sodic lands to increase their productivity. Thus the present
technology was developed to produce a consortia of beneficial microbes which
have universal applicability, higher self-life and lowest cost of production.
o Low cost technology for prevention and treatment of sub-clinical and
clinical mastitis in bovines
Mastitis is a serious problem in milch animals and no effective prevention or full
proof therapeutic technology is available to control this complex inflammatory
disease. It threatens the profitability of dairy ventures and situation is critical
when animals reared by poor farmers for their livelihood, are affected by the
disease. Once the fibrosis occurs there is no reversal and slaughter is the only
option. The consumers consuming such milk are also at risk for their health. The
present formulation supports the continuous milk synthesis, healing of the
glandular secretary epithelium and suppresses the growth of microbes. It is
highly economical and cost per animal is around Rs 70/- against cost of standard
treatment regimens costing more than Rs. 500/- per case and can be adopted by
even illiterate and semi-literate farmers, as it is simple, easy to handle and
without need for any extra facilities. With longer shelf-life, the technology can
restore milk production at much higher rate than in the case of standard
treatment.
o New color based method for detection of detergent in milk
Marine Products
o Pond and Cage culture for cobia fish
Technology on cage grow out culture of cobia was developed using formulated
feed at a stocking density of 4 fish/m3 with the production of 8 kg/m3 with an
average weight of 4.5 kg in a period ten months.
o Pond grow out technology of cobia fish

Technology on Pond grow out culture of cobia was developed for the first time in
India with the production of 1kg/sq. m at the stocking density of 0.25
fish/m2(1fish/4 m2) with an average weight of 4 kg in a period of ten months.
o Suitable wet feed and feeding protocol for developing cobia broodstock
For cobia culture operations, huge amount of feed is needed. The wet feed
technology will ease the culture technology of cobia. This will also help in solving
financial commitments of farmers and women SHG as it provides employment
opportunity to the fisher folks.
o Cobia value added products
Technology for making value added products from cobia like cobia pickle , cobia
macaroni/noodles, canned cobia, cook chilled cobia fish curry, retort pouch cobia
fish curry, fresh /tray packaging, vacuum and modified atmospheric packaged
products, collagen and leather.
Horticulture
o Technologies for development of dry flower products
Identification of 40 locally available species suitable for dry flower technology has
been done. The process has been refined and technology is ready for
commercialization.
o Packaging and value addition for jasmine flowers
o Precision production technology of marigold
o Recovery of lac dye of improved quality
o Improved bleaching agent for bleached lac
Crop Production
o Modular vector for one-step assembly of intron containing hairpin RNA
for high throughput gene silencing in plants
RNAi mediated gene silencing requires synthesis/introduction of dsRNA in the cells, this
requires assembly of intron containing hairpin (IHP) RNA constructs. This is a cumbersome
process needing multiple steps of PCR, cloning etc. The current technology highly simplifies
the process of ihp assembly and requires just a single steps of PCR, restriction, ligation and
transformation, thus minimizing the effort, cost and time required for the ihp assembly.
o Anthocyanin enriched tomato fruits
Anthocyanins are potent antioxidants and cell cycle regulators proven to have
protective functions against cancer and cardio vascular diseases. Dietary
consumption of anthocyanins lowers the health risks and WHO estimates that
80% of heart diseases and a third of cancers can be avoided by following
healthier diet. Tomato plants were metabolically engineered to accumulate

anthocyanins thought the fruit. The anthocyanin accumulation was 100-150 folds.
The carotenoid (lycopene) content was unchanged thus resulting in combined
benefits of water soluble anthocyanins and fat soluble carotenoids by
consumption of the tomato fruit.
o Extraction and production of anthocyanin concentrate from black carrot

o Refinement in process for the extraction of steviol glycoside from Stevia

Agri-Inputs
o Xylanase hyper-producing thermophilic fungal strain
A thermophilic fungal strain has been developed by screening and selection
amongst the wild type strains of Thermomyces lanuginosus, isolated from the
composting soils of Amritsar. The strain CM11 was developed from this, which
produces one of the highest cellulase free xylanase. The xylanase (2800
units/ml) is produced maximally in shake flask culture in a complex medium and
the optimization was carried out by response surface methodology using Box-
Behnken design of experiments which were validated by repeat experiments.
o Organic liquid fertilizer from banana pseudostem sap
Banana pseudostem sap is a rich source of plant nutrients like K and plant growth
regulators. This can be enriched with organic inputs and when applied to crop
plants like mango, chili, brinjal and other crops increases yield by 10-13%.
o Nanotechnology for enhanced utilization of native Phosphorous and
other elements by plants and higher moisture retention in arid soils
Nano-fertilizers are the essential plant nutrients prepared by isolating
microorganisms which produce certain enzymes that can break down respective
salts to nano-particles readily absorbed by plants through the stomatal route.
The nano-fertilizers enhances nutrient supply to crop plants while reduces
chemical fertilizer usage, with a three-fold increase in Nutrient Use Efficiency
(NUE) and effects cost reduction: per hectare chemical fertilizer usage cost on an
average is Rs. 960 for Phosphorous fertilizers and Rs 800 for Zinc based
fertilizers while using nano based fertilizer, it is Rs. 300 each for Phosphorous
and Zinc based fertilizer.
o ELISA Kit (Expression constructs or Serodiagnosis of Plant viruses) for
detection of cucumber mosaic virus, potyvirus and Peanut mottle virus

The technology involves serological (protein based) diagnosis of plant viruses.
Traditional methodology has a limitation to produce ELISA based plant virus
diagnostic kit as antigen preparation is difficult on renewable basis. The following
innovations were made for generating antigen and antibody in E. coli, which has
prospect for up scaling and commercial utilization:
Antigen constructs preparation using full and core conserved region of capsid
protein gene sequence that over produced adequate antigen required for
polyclonal antibody production.
Engineered monoclonal antibody expression constructs that generate antibody
directly in E.coli.
o Bio-pesticidal nematodes for managing insect pests
Bio-pesticidal nematodes isolated from Indian soils which are effective at a
temperature range of 15 to 350C.
o Samfungicide: Nano-fungicide
The present invention relates to the development of surface modified monoclinic
sulfur nanoparticles of average size 20-100, their liquid synthesis using
polyethylene glycol-400 as a surfactant and use as fungicide. Nanoparticles thus
synthesized provide excellent fungitoxic efficacy against the fungal pathogens.
