Agile Camp 2018 - The Pitfalls of the Unspoken

  2. Think about a team (be it work, family, church group, etc) What expectations do you have for your teammates? What expectations do they have for you? What do I expect from myself? Write them down Is it possible to have no expectations? When you have expectations and they’re not met, what happens for you?
  3. Dopamine is  key neurotransmitter for motivation, focus and productivity When meeting expectations occur: Dopamine increases – general feeling of excitement, happy, pleasure When expectations unmet: Many common dopamine deficiency symptoms are similar to those of depression: lack of motivation fatigue apathy procrastination mood swings hopelessness memory loss inability to concentrate
  4. Difference between your Expectation and what you Observe is your frustration Think about that… your expectations don’t match up with what you observe, you get frustrated The level of frustration is the DIFFERENCE between the two
  5. We all have a playbook – problem is, they are all different Playbook has: How we want things to be What we expect it to be like In this playbook is a set of expectations for one another When are your expectations usually articulated? In general, you communicate your expectation only when you are disappointed
  6. Unspoken What are some examples of unspoken expectations Agreement: Arrive on time What I mean: (Start on time so arrive 5 mins early) Veiled Expectations usually in the form of a question I want you all to get together and decide what you want for lunch Team deliberates and comes back with Sandwiches… we want sandwiches I say, well… I ordered Pizza What does that feel like?
  7. Let your observation take precedent over your expectation Pause a moment, evaluate the situation Recognize what’s going on for you… If you are not meeting MY expectation, that is MY “problem”
  8. Is the expectation realistic Is it understood Has it even been communicated
  9. I think healthy, realistic expectations that are communicated are good to have Evaluate everything starting with yourself Was the expectation reasonable Were they attainable What could I have done to improve the outcome Was the expectation clear – was it even communicated Brainstorm Think about all the expectations we have for one another Ask similar questions Is it reasonable Attainable Communicated Write them down / Talk about them (continually)
  10. Remember the expectations you wrote down at the beginning? What will you do with those? How will you be curious? Evaluate yourself and the expectations you have for others? If they are not communicated, will you articulate them?
