“But first I need to check with…”
So…what’s preventing you?
So…what worries you?
“This is the 5th time this type of
ticket has come in, I am going to
do a root cause analysis and then I
intend to fix the underlying issue,
so that we don’t get these tickets
anymore.”
Greatest problems solved by passionate unleashed volunteers – Stephen Covey
Take a minute and write down “what you do here” on a sticky in front of you. Then go and place it on the large green wall.
Have you said: “whatever I am told”, “What THEY tell me to!”, etc.
Who is “they?”

Thoughts directed and told
Do you ask: Could we?, Do we have permission? Is it ok if…? What should I/we do?
This is a Leader-follower environment.
Why? - The way it has always been done
Why is this ok? Do you ask people to make decisions for you in your personal life? Like: What should I order? Is it ok if I watch… Should I go workout? – You already know the benefit. Prepare yourself
Experiment: next time you eat out, let someone else order for you. If this has happened, how did it make you feel?
Are you achieving excellence or avoiding making mistakes – What do you need to do to achieve excellence? What is the difference?
Activity – Think of a time where you might have been just avoiding making mistakes. How did that feel? Check in the box? How could you have approached it differently?
“What is the long term impact of solving other peoples problems?”
Poll Title: What does being a leader look like?
https://www.polleverywhere.com/free_text_polls/upZOImIovgenq4x
It isn’t a question of can we, but more importantly do you want to be and what does it look like? – open ? To the floor.
Looks like – modeling behaviours, finding passion, stop asking for permission, start saying: “I intend to”, “I will…”, “I am…”
Has this happened? Have you said something like this? Have you heard something like this?
Think about the statement. On the note cards on your table:
Think about something that is going on in your life/team either professional or personal, write down the statement and what you worry about.
Share with someone at your table – try to find someone who isn’t on your team. Discuss how you could change the decision, the presentation of the decision by the words that you use. Use “I intend to…”, “I am going to…”, “I will…”
How do you feel about everyone being a leader?
This does not mean title, but an embodiment of leadership
Some things to consider
Be curious
Ask ?’s
Where should authority sit?
Authority where information is
Commitment – we chose to be here…Be PRESENT
Courage – Choose to do the right thing, even it might be uncomfortable. Not just doing or saying what you think is right. Admitting mistakes
Initiative – we take action w/out direction from above
Take charge of your destiny
Innovation – Looking at new ways of doing the same thing
Protecting people
Remember protecting people from the consequences of their mistakes is the path to irresponsibility.
It does mean providing the path, tools, to help give them an advantage to accomplish their own achievements.
Specify goals not methods
Changing behaviour is challenging
It takes work, practice
Don’t expect to make the perfect Hulk cake on your first try
Admit your mistakes
Be curious. Don’t ask a question with an answer in mind, that isn’t curious. You must be truly curious about the answer.
You own your own path, so create it. Stop the “You told me to” or “I just do what I am told”
Move the authority to the information. Use declaration statements like “I intent to”, “I will”.
Stop checking in with statuses – intentional.
