Of all the datasets that could be delivered to your desk, the most difficult one to work with might be that big dataset. Besides its massive size, it’s exponential growth even as you work on it, and the variety of data types present, big data presents many issues that make it difficult to turn data into action. In this presentation, you will learn how to take thousands of variables and billions of records and turn them into useable and actionable results, just as you would with any traditional research dataset.

Mob Programming thought leader, Woody Zuill, suggests that instead of always focusing on solving problems, we also take the time to notice the things that are going well and amplify them, thereby "turning up the good". When it comes to SAFe Dean Leffingwell perhaps said it best: "There is no magic in SAFe . . . except maybe for PI Planning." I suspect most of you agree that PI Planning is the magic in SAFe. There is nothing quite like the energy created by bringing a group of 100+ people together to build a collaborative plan over a couple of days every 10 to 12 weeks. So what would it mean to "turn up the good in PI Planning"? If we focused on what is good and what we want more of, would we get more magic?! For Em and Adrienne, the answer is a resounding "Yes!" In this session, they will take the "The Facilitator’s Guide to PI Planning" and illustrate how turning up the good can bring your PI Planning magic to the next level.

This was a workshop hosted at AESP's National Conference in 2018. Finding good answers in the increasingly fast-paced energy efficiency business environment can make the difference between finding a competitive edge or being left in the dust. Brainstorming is one of the most common ways to identify actionable ideas. Yet numerous studies have shown that typical group brainstorming is not very effective. In fact, it has been shown that solo head scratching can often generate better ideas. The best path, however, is a hybrid of these two methodologies. This session will demonstrate a proven enhanced brainstorming process that avoids the pitfalls of conventional brainstorming sessions, taking advantage of the creative mind. This session will be conducted as an actual brainstorming session, with full attendee participation, demonstrating successful brainstorming approaches. For this, we will identify an issue that is important to our industry and brainstorm solutions. In keeping with the spirit of brainstorming, we want AESP’s creative minds to help choose that topic, and we will solicit ideas from your conference committee.

• How can we make Agile Scaling less of a goal itself and more of a method to get our organizational goals?
• We know we need to scale but where do we go from here?
I'll share the three factors that emerged as common themes throughout my experience working on government Agile Scaling projects that ultimately impacted the trajectory of each agency's Scaling journey:
• Communicate vision consistently
• Focus on your people genuinely
• Create your own path intentionally
Regardless of the agency acronym or the frameworks used, these concepts shaped their Scaling outcomes.
So, whether you are working in the government, commercial or the non-profit space, these concepts can help you take your organization to the peak of its Agile Scaling journey.

Abstract
I spent January 2018 in Antarctica hanging out with penguins, whales, and seals. It was about as different from my day-to-day work as an Agile Coach as can be. And yet, on my long flight home, I couldn’t help but reflect on how well my trip aligned with one specific value of the Agile Manifesto: “Responding to change over following a plan.”
I think it’s a common misconception that there’s no need to plan in Agile. And while this isn’t the case, specific approaches to planning do change—from big upfront design to a “just enough” approach. The act of planning still holds great value when it occurs at the right level, but in Agile we accept that many things will change and we’ll need to remain flexible to respond to them. If we’ve planned well, we’ll go into those changes with a clear sense of our goal and how to still achieve it under the new circumstances.
Nowhere is this truer than in Antarctica. Throughout the session, I’ll share six specific takeaways about change and planning that I brought back from my trip. I’ll share how my trip to Antarctica drove home why we need both planning AND, even more importantly, the ability to respond to change and how these real-life, non-software examples of responding to change can serve as great reminders to bring back to more typical work environments, including software development. And after being stuck in Antarctica six days longer than planned, I'll share why my biggest takeaway of them all was increased empathy for team members struggling with dynamic situations!

7 Things Agile Leaders and Executives Do Differently - Agile Australia 2016 b...Dipesh Pala
One of the keys to a successful enterprise Agile transformation is the support of executive leadership, which is more than simply providing approval. The Agile executive enables, empowers and engages rather than controls.
According to one recent survey, more than one in three organisations claim that the lack of leadership engagement within their businesses is plaguing their journey towards sustainable organisational agility.
With a special focus on executives and leaders, this presentation will be draw upon more than a decade of Agile transformation experiences in multiple organisations across eight countries, and will share real-life case studies and insights to illustrate the key things that Agile leaders need to do differently.
Be inspired by knowing what serves to catalyse and nourish progress – and what does the opposite.
This presentation was delivered at our "Eleven Nights" event in Hobart on August 29th.
Eduardo Nofuentes & Martine Sholl shared practical, real-world insights on our eleven steps for high-performing teams.
Distributed Teams - Hello? Can anyone hear me?Growing Agile
In the ideal perfect world there will be rainbows and unicorns and teams that all sit together. In reality, most teams have to deal with distribution in one form or another. For some: it’s team members spread across a building, for others it’s team members in other parts of the world in different time zones.
Have you even been on a call where you can hear someone ordering coffee, or a dog barking? My favorite is being told someone is joining the call, after you've spent 5 minutes explaining something in detail. Mostly distributed meetings are boring, and not really worth the time and effort.
As agile coaches we truly value face to face communication and visible boards and sticky-notes, we also value working from anywhere, having pets in the office and not having to travel. So what is possible here? We decided to fully immerse ourselves into the distributed world and see what happened. We were amazed - we managed to build trust, explore and discover great collaborative tools and we improved communication.
We would like to share some of our discoveries and tips with you. Join us to explore how agile can work for distributed teams.
An executive once declared that "I don't see the point of project retrospectives, nothing ever changes." Honestly, she is right too much of the time. While retrospectives are a deceptively simple concept, they are often a waste of your team's time. On the other hand, they are also frequently lauded by experts as the "one weird tip" that can positively transform your team even if you ignore all the other agile practices.
In this session, I'll walk through effective and engaging retrospective techniques that will help your team improve on a consistent basis.
Social Connections 14 - Watson Analytics: accelerate your Connections adoptionpanagenda
Recording: http://pan.news/X8DL30mvmnr
Abstract: Watson Analytics is a powerful tool to explore and analyze data. Join Franz Walder to learn about how to get started, by working through three social adoption use cases. IBM Connections adoption is a challenge for many companies. What is the most effective utilization of the environment? Who is using which resources, what in the environment is dormant or orphaned? Where should efforts focus in order to improve adoption? All of these questions can be difficult to answer and there is no “one size fits all” solution as each organization has their own unique needs. This session will give you a place to start by utilizing the cognitive power of Watson Analytics.

Deliver:agile2018 - basic user research skills for non-designersSophie Freiermuth
Slides from my workshop at Deliver:Agile 2018, held 29 April - 2 May in Austin TX.
In this workshop, I'll share user testing practices, techniques, and skills that will help you, a non-designer or researcher, contribute to, or even run testing with users. I'll particularly focus on all that can be done on agile-only projects, where outcomes and insights need to processed promptly and efficiently. I've identified two key areas of value: note taking and facilitating. Note taking is often asked of the team when viewing a session, however, there are a few subtleties to taking notes that make them either easy to analyze, or useless, and I'll share on that. The other key knowledge is the actual facilitation of tests, and I'll invite you to consider all it encompasses, in order to nourish your personal reflection on skills and practices.
Created specifically for non-designers, this workshop aims to upskill participants in taking valuable notes when observing sessions, and understand how testing needs to be facilitated in order to obtain robust insights. These skills can then be shared, in order to enable the team to be more efficient a conducting research, and become a balanced team where research isn't bottlenecked by the capacity of a trained researcher or designer.
Comprising contextual theory, and a lot of hands-on practice as well as tools to reflect on performance and progress, this workshop will leave you better informed on testing with users, a better collaborator to research that may be ongoing with your product or service, and a more understanding colleague to designers and researchers.
This session welcomes further questions on research and will allow ample time for discussions.
7 Things Agile Executives Do Differently - Dipesh PalaDipesh Pala
With a special focus on Executive teams, Dipesh Pala will be drawing upon more than a decade of Agile transformation experiences across multiple organizations, and share real-life case studies and insights to illustrate the following key things that Agile Executives and Leaders need to do differently:

2. Slow Down to Go Faster
3. One Team, One Dream
4. Foster Fully Capable Teams
5. Fail Early & Fail Small
6. Deliver Business Value, not just Projects
7. Servant Leadership
If you are an Executive or a Leader of an Agile team, this session will provide clear implications for where to focus your efforts in order to unleash the full potential of Agile methods to gain a competitive edge. You will be inspired by knowing what serves to catalyze and nourish progress – and what does the opposite.

Are you struggling to integrate User Experience techniques with your agile teams? Are any of these patterns familiar?
The UX team works one sprint ahead of the development team.
UX designers spend lots of energy on high fidelity mock-ups which the developers then ignore.
You produce working software each sprint, but recruiting users is time consuming so you only test with users before you release.
There is no time to incorporate changes from user feedback into the sprints before release.
The UX designers and the developers seem to speak a different language.
Developers get annoyed because the UX design work great on iOS, but clashes with Android standards.
If so join us for a fun interactive session where we use Lego to explore how you can overcome challenges like this in your own environment. You’ll work as a team doing both UX design, and development (with Lego), and see how and why these patterns happen, as well as what you can do about them.
This workshop is ideal for people from both the UX world, struggling to understand how to work with developers, and for developers struggling to understand what UX designers are trying to achieve.
