Kai Kreuzer of Deutsche Telekom AG presented on building an independent, open source, and modular smart home system called Eclipse SmartHome. The system runs on any platform and includes tools for discovery, setup and configuration, a rule engine for automation, data handling via a REST API, user interfaces, voice enabling capabilities, integration of various devices, and persistence of data through memory, local storage or cloud-based options. Kreuzer demonstrated the system during his presentation.

AWS offers a variety of tools enabling users to create highly scalable, durable and resilient architectures and the user community has developed a broad range of best practices and frameworks to build rock-solid systems on top of AWS. Many customers such as Netflix, Airbnb, Smugmug and others, already demonstrated those practices in production systems. While the theoretical concepts of building resilient architectures are well established, the practices of maintaining such systems are less understood, mostly because of the unpredictability of production environments under stress conditions. To address this issue, many adopted the concept of Game Days, which consists of simulating unexpected failures to test the resilience, detect and fix flaws, and more importantly train the operation teams on emergency situations. This session covers the best practices learned from many AWS customers who implemented the Game Days practice and the different failure simulation techniques that can be used on AWS.

Shift-left SRE: Self-healing on OpenShift with Ansible
Even test-driven development or an automated Jenkins pipeline doesn’t guarantee issue-free production operations. Nothing is immune to spike in traffic or unforeseen infrastructure issues. To increase resilience, we see a trend in applying a shift-left approach to the SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) discipline. SREs are contributing their “auto remediation as code” assets to the code repositories which get automatically built and tested in CI/CD and enable automated problem remediation in production.
In this session we showcase Shift-Left SRE by leveraging Ansible on OpenShift to automate remediation of production issues based on full stack monitoring data.
Chris Boos No Cloud Without Automation
This document discusses the need for automation in cloud computing environments. It notes that cloud infrastructure and services can change instantly, making manual administration too slow. Traditional IT service management approaches do not work in cloud environments where the debugging target is always moving. AWS Summit Tel Aviv - Startup Track - Continuous Deployment

How we found a firewall vendor bug using Teleport as a bastion jump host
Teleport is an SSH system which we’ve fallen in love with. There are some great security features, of course:
- two factor authentication right out of the box
- acts as ssh certificate authority issuing short-lived credentials
- commercial options for role-based access control
But the features which we find most compelling are the ones you can’t get as easily with the likes of OpenSSH:
- session recording which can be used for audit or to refer back to from troubleshooting tickets
- session sharing so that our customers or junior staff can learn-by-doing, just like having dual controls on a car
- NAT-piercing to help manage devices within customer networks that do not have direct Internet connectivity
We have been using Teleport on a number of projects and with several customers:
- a remote probe deployment to debug a strange, intermittent connectivity problem (given as a talk at UKNOF 40 in conjunction with David Farrar of Exa Networks)
- training sessions with customers’ technical staff to show them a slightly unusual systems administration request — and the resulting session recording is an excellent reference for next time their staff encounter a similar request for changes
- paralleling pair programming we have been able to “observe” or “navigate” while junior staff “drive” the console to perform systems or network adminstration for the first time
I’ve evangelised Teleport because I feel its use fits with our philosophy of openness. Teleport could complement the knowledge sharing that goes on within network operations teams, and help senior staff work out the playbooks and improve operational procedures for their junior staff. At least one service provider was inspired by my longer Teleport presentation at NetMcr and set their junior staff the background task of moving all out-of-band access to their POP infrastructure to Teleport. I hope that their use of this tool empowers their junior engineers to take on more work, while satisfying any regulatory or audit requirements that security staff worry about.

openHAB @ Devoxx 2012
This document introduces openHAB, an open source home automation platform. OpenHAB allows users to integrate and automate smart devices from different manufacturers in a central interface. It uses a flexible architecture based on OSGi with bindings that connect to devices using various protocols. DC/OS grew out of the need for a new way to develop and run applications at scale across datacenters, as traditional servers and mainframes are no longer suitable. It provides consistent architecture, resource management, and a user interface to deploy and manage applications. Many companies are seeing cost reductions and improved deployment times by running applications on DC/OS.

Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
