Building on the success of USAID’s APHIAplus Nairobi County work, the Afya Jijini Project will
strengthen Nairobi County-level institutional and management capacity to deliver quality healthcare
services. Afya Jijini’s ultimate aim is to improve access and uptake of quality health services in
Nairobi for the most pressing health issues. The project seeks specifically to:
1. Increase access and use of quality HIV services.
2. Improve access and uptake of maternal, neonatal, and child health (MNCH),family planning
(FP) and reproductive health (RH),Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and nutrition
services.
3. Strengthen County and Sub-County health systems.
Project Approach: The success of Afya Jijini requires IMA’s Team to work at national, county, sub-
county, facility and informal settlement levels, supporting local staff and health facilities to address
challenges across technical and management arenas. IMA’s will work with the County Health
Management Team (CHMT) and sub-county health teams to better manage, deliver, and report on
health services in the devolved context and in compliance with Government of Kenya (GoK) policies.
IMA’s approach recognizes that the achievement of Afya Jijini goals depends on the success of health
facilities to provide quality services. IMA’s Team will support each level of the Nairobi County
health system—county, sub-county, facility, community—to strengthen the role each must play to
achieve project goals.
Partners: IMA’s Team consists of a strong complement of Kenyan implementers, deeply rooted in
Nairobi’s informal settlements. With more than 50 combined years of intense capacity building in
HIV prevention, treatment, and care in Nairobi’s informal settlements, IMA’s local partners have
become well-versed in what works and what doesn’t in the HIV epidemic, and are uniquely
positioned to partner with the CHMT and sub-districts to deliver improved health outcomes.
Collectively, our team reaches more than 90 percent of Nairobi’s informal settlements. Our partners
have a strong track record of HIV; TB; MNCH; and community-based health service delivery.
About IMA World Health: IMA collaborates with governments, faith-based organizations, national
partners, and the private sector to ensure integrated, comprehensive, and quality healthcare services
for the most vulnerable. Initially founded in 1960 to support Protestant Mission hospitals globally,
IMA has blossomed into a faith-based non-profit organization that provides targeted health systems
strengthening efforts in some of the most extreme post-conflict and challenging settings in Africa,
