3. Problem statement
Mental health issues have increased among students during the
pandemic due to multiple factors such as:
● Difficulty adjusting academically and feeling socially isolated.
● Having limited resources and lack of privacy at home.
● Disruptions of routines.
● Challenges of remote learning and fear of getting infected, etc.
Some students suffer in silence because of the stigma around
seeking help, and some are not aware of help offered by institution.
Research shows that there are few prevalence studies of mental
health difficulties among South African university students, but
existing data suggest that 12 per cent experience moderate to
severe symptoms of depression, 15 per cent have moderate to
severe symptoms of anxiety and 24 per cent report suicidal ideation.
In recent years, increasing rates of student suicides at South African
universities have heightened the urgency of developing coherent
institutional strategies to address student mental health needs.
4. Solution Overview
● We created a mental health application called
Affirmations.
● It raises awareness around various mental health
illneseses, and provides valuable tools to help students
deal with these issues.
● As an aid to our research, we created a questionnaire for
students to get an idea on what they understand about
mental health, whether they would make use of the
application that we have decided to build and what
features would they like to see on the app.
● We also created a questionnaire for the student
counselling and the data collected from this
questionnaire would help us better understand the issues
students face, and how to make our application useful to
students in helping them deal with their mental health
issues. We also did research on similar mental health apps
to get an idea of how we could create our app.
